How to Take a Screenshot Across Multiple Screens

Capture every monitor, one display, a window, or a selected region on Windows and Mac with the right shortcut and settings.

On Windows, press Print Screen (or Ctrl+Print Screen) to capture the entire virtual screen across connected monitors. Press Alt+Print Screen for the active window, or Windows+Shift+S to select a monitor, window, or region. On macOS, use the Screenshot shortcuts or Screenshot app to capture an entire screen, a window, or a selected portion.

The correct method depends on three choices:

  • Scope: every connected display, one monitor, one window, or a rectangle.
  • Destination: clipboard for immediate pasting, or a saved image file.
  • Editing: a raw capture, or annotation and repeatable automation.

Windows: capture multiple monitors

Windows exposes all connected displays as one virtual screen. Microsoft Learn documents that PRINTSCREEN captures the entire virtual screen, while ALT+PRINTSCREEN captures the foreground window. The virtual screen includes the monitors arranged in your Display settings, including displays positioned above, below, or to either side of the primary monitor.

1. Capture every connected display

  1. Arrange and enable your monitors in Settings → System → Display.
  2. Press Print Screen. On some keyboards this is labeled PrtSc or requires Fn.
  3. Paste the result with Ctrl+V into Paint, an image editor, a document, or a chat application.

Ctrl+Print Screen also captures the entire virtual screen. If the image looks unusually wide or contains blank space, check the relative monitor positions in Display settings; Windows preserves that virtual layout.

2. Save the full multi-monitor capture automatically

Press Windows+Print Screen. Windows saves the image in Pictures\Screenshots. This is useful for repeated captures because it avoids opening an editor just to save the clipboard contents.

3. Capture one monitor or a custom region

Press Windows+Shift+S to open Snipping Tool’s overlay. Choose one of these modes:

Mode Use it for
Rectangle Drag a box around one monitor or any area, even when it crosses a display boundary.
Freeform Trace an irregular area.
Window Capture one application window without the rest of the desktop.
Fullscreen Capture the complete desktop arrangement.

The snip is copied to the clipboard and opened in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate it, save it, or share it. Microsoft Support documents Ctrl+C for copying and Ctrl+S for saving.

4. Capture only the active application

Focus the window and press Alt+Print Screen. This captures the foreground window even if it is displayed on a secondary monitor. Paste or save the result as needed.

macOS: capture one or more displays

Apple’s Screenshot tools capture the entire screen, a window, or a selected portion. On macOS Mojave 10.14 and later, the Screenshot app also provides controls for choosing the destination, adding a timer, and recording the screen.

Keyboard shortcuts

Shortcut Result
Shift+Command+3 Capture the screen or screens according to macOS’s full-screen capture behavior.
Shift+Command+4 Drag a selection across one monitor, part of a monitor, or a rectangle spanning displays.
Shift+Command+4, then Space Capture a specific window.
Shift+Command+5 Open the Screenshot app controls for still captures and screen recordings.

By default, macOS saves screenshots to the desktop. In the Screenshot app, choose Options to change the destination to Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, or another location. Hold Control with a screenshot shortcut to copy the capture to the clipboard instead of saving a file.

Getting a single image that spans two Macs displays

Start with Shift+Command+4 and drag from one edge of the desktop to the other. Whether the result is one combined image or separate full-screen files depends on the macOS version and capture mode. If you need a guaranteed single canvas, use a selection spanning both displays, then verify the resulting dimensions before sharing.

Only the left or right monitor Windows+Shift+S, Rectangle mode Shift+Command+4, select that display

Display arrangement, scaling, and file size

  • Arrangement: A monitor placed above another creates negative or offset coordinates in the virtual desktop. Blank areas in the resulting image can be expected.
  • Mixed resolutions: A 4K monitor beside a 1080p monitor produces a non-uniform desktop. Text may appear at different physical sizes.
  • Display scaling: Windows scaling and macOS Retina density affect pixel dimensions. Check the image dimensions if you are preparing documentation or a test fixture.
  • Orientation: Portrait monitors create a tall section in the combined canvas. Keep the displays aligned in settings if you want fewer empty regions.
  • File size: PNG preserves sharp text but can be large for a wide desktop. JPEG is smaller but introduces artifacts around text and UI edges.

Troubleshooting

It normally copies the image to the clipboard, so open Paint or another editor and press Ctrl+V. On laptops, try Fn+Print Screen. If you want a file immediately, use Windows+Print Screen.

The capture includes the wrong monitors

Print Screen captures the entire virtual screen by design. Use Snipping Tool Rectangle mode to select one display, or use Window mode for a single application. Confirm that disabled or phantom displays are removed in Display settings.

There is blank space around the monitors

Windows and macOS preserve the logical arrangement of displays. Open display settings and align the monitor rectangles so their edges match. A monitor positioned higher or lower naturally creates unused space in a combined canvas.

A window capture is black or incomplete

Some applications protect their content or do not permit window screenshots. Apple specifically notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow window screenshots. Try a full-screen or region capture, if the content owner permits it.

Text looks blurry

Capture the display at its native scaling and save as PNG. Avoid resizing the image before saving. For mixed-DPI monitors, capture the specific window or monitor instead of creating one very wide image.

The Screenshot app cannot save to the expected folder

Open Shift+Command+5, select Options, and choose the destination again. Check that the destination exists and that macOS has permission to write there.

Performance, reliability, and privacy

  • Speed: Clipboard shortcuts are fastest for one-off work. Saving a full multi-monitor PNG takes longer when the canvas is large.
  • Reliability: Built-in shortcuts do not depend on a network connection. Verify the capture after changing monitor cables, docks, resolution, or scaling.
  • Privacy: A full virtual-screen image may include notifications, private messages, credentials, or unrelated windows. Select only the required region before sharing.
  • Repeatability: For documentation, keep monitor arrangement, scaling, and application window positions fixed. This makes later captures comparable.
  • Cost: Windows and macOS built-in tools have no additional software cost. Dedicated capture software is useful when you need monitor-specific workflows, annotation, or automation.

Or skip the browser setup

The desktop shortcuts above capture your local monitors. If what you need is a repeatable screenshot of a website at a wide viewport or across responsive layouts, ScreenshotNeo does it with one API request. Its browser handles cookie and consent banners, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and lets you control each cleanup step. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the full option list and request formats in the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

FAQ

How do I screenshot both monitors at once on Windows?

Press Print Screen or Ctrl+Print Screen for the entire virtual screen. Use Windows+Print Screen to save it directly.

How do I screenshot only my second monitor?

Use Windows+Shift+S and select Rectangle mode, then drag over the second display. On macOS, use Shift+Command+4 and select that display.

Why does Print Screen capture my whole desktop?

That is its documented behavior: it captures the entire virtual screen. Use Alt+Print Screen for the active window or a region-selection shortcut for a smaller area.

Can a website screenshot API capture my physical monitors?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages in a browser at a requested viewport. Use the operating-system shortcuts for local desktop monitors.

What format should I use?

Use PNG for text-heavy screenshots and lossless editing. Use JPEG when a smaller file matters more than pixel-perfect text.
