Quick answer: Press Windows + PrtScr to save the entire screen as an image. Press PrtScr to copy the whole desktop to the clipboard, Alt + PrtScr to copy only the active window, or Windows + Shift + S to select a region with Snipping Tool.

Choose the right Dell screenshot method

The main Dell shortcuts differ by capture scope and whether the result is saved or copied.

1. Save a full-screen screenshot to a file

  1. Show the screen you want to capture.
  2. Press Windows + PrtScr at the same time.
  3. The display may briefly dim. Windows saves the file automatically.
  4. Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.

This is the fastest option when you need a complete desktop image and do not need to edit it first.

2. Copy the entire screen to the clipboard

  1. Press PrtScr.
  2. Open the destination app, such as Paint, Word, an email message or a chat.
  3. Press Ctrl + V to paste the capture.
  4. Save or send it from that application.

Use this method when you want to crop, annotate or paste the screenshot directly into another document instead of creating a file immediately.

3. Capture only the active window

  1. Click the window you want so it is active.
  2. Press Alt + PrtScr.
  3. Paste the result with Ctrl + V into Paint, Word, email or another application.

Only the selected window is copied. The taskbar and other windows are excluded.

4. Select a region with Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. Choose a capture mode from the toolbar: rectangular, freeform, window or full screen.
  3. Drag over the area, select a window, or choose the full screen mode.
  4. Select the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool.
  5. Use Save as to choose a filename and folder.

Snipping Tool supports pen and highlighter markup, shapes, erasing, cropping and text actions for extracting text. Text recognition runs locally on the device.

Capture a menu or popup with a delay

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Choose a delay from 1 to 5 seconds.
  3. Open the menu or position the popup while the timer runs.
  4. Complete the capture using your selected mode.

Record a video snip

  1. Press Windows + Shift + R, or open Snipping Tool and choose the Record button.
  2. Select the region to record.
  3. Choose Start, perform the actions, then choose Stop.
  4. Save the resulting recording from Snipping Tool.

5. Find, rename and edit your screenshots

Full-screen captures made with Windows + PrtScr are normally in Pictures > Screenshots. Snipping Tool captures are automatically saved to its Screenshots folder and can also be saved with Save as to any location.

  • Rename: In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Rename.
  • Crop: Open the capture in Snipping Tool and choose Crop.
  • Annotate: Use the pen, highlighter and shape tools.
  • Extract text: Use Snipping Tool’s text actions when text recognition is available.
  • Share: Use the Share option in Snipping Tool or attach the saved file to another app.

6. Locate the Print Screen key on a Dell keyboard

Dell keyboards may label the key PrintScreen, PrntScrn, PrntScr, PrtScn, PrtScr or PrtSc. On many laptops it is on the function row and shares another function with a key such as F10 or Insert.

If pressing the key alone does nothing, try the model’s function-layer combination, commonly Fn + F10 or Fn + Insert. Layouts vary by model, so use the product user guide when these combinations do not match your keyboard.

7. Change what the Print Screen key does

If pressing PrtSc opens the snipping overlay instead of copying the full screen, Windows may be configured to use the key for screen snipping.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility > Keyboard.
  3. Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
  4. Turn the setting on or off according to the behavior you want.

8. Troubleshooting Dell screenshots

Nothing happens when you press PrtSc

The key may be on an Fn layer. Try Fn + F10, Fn + Insert or the combination listed in your Dell model guide. You can also use Windows + Shift + S, which does not depend on the Print Screen key.

An automated capture can remove common overlays before saving the webpage image.

PrtSc opens Snipping Tool unexpectedly

Disable or enable Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping under Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.

The screenshot was copied but no file appeared

PrtScr and Alt + PrtScr copy images to the clipboard; they do not automatically save a file. Paste the image into Paint or another app and save it. For automatic saving, use Windows + PrtScr.

The screenshot is not in Pictures > Screenshots

Check whether you used Snipping Tool, which has its own Screenshots folder and Save as workflow. Also check OneDrive or a managed Windows profile if your Pictures folder is redirected.

The capture includes the wrong window

For Alt + PrtScr, click the target window first. For a precise area, use Windows + Shift + S and select a rectangle.

A menu disappears before it is captured

Use Snipping Tool’s 1-to-5-second Delay, then open the menu while the timer is running.

You need to capture a webpage without browser clutter

Use a browser capture workflow or an API instead of the laptop display shortcuts. This is useful for repeatable documentation, automated tests and server-side jobs.

9. Screenshot quality, performance and privacy

  • Resolution: Keyboard shortcuts capture the desktop at the current display resolution and scaling.
  • Speed: Windows + PrtScr and clipboard shortcuts are immediate. Delays and video recording add processing time.
  • Editing: Snipping Tool is faster for markup and cropping than opening a separate editor.
  • Repeatability: Use the same window size and display scaling when comparing screenshots over time.
  • Privacy: Check the capture for passwords, notifications, personal messages and hidden browser tabs before sharing.
  • File size: Cropping unused desktop areas reduces the size of screenshots you upload or send.

Or skip the browser setup

For automated webpage screenshots, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. The following calls use the required API endpoint and are ready to adapt by changing the target URL.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
