How to Take a Screenshot of an Entire Web Page on Windows
Capture a complete scrolling webpage on Windows with OneNote Web Clipper, understand Snipping Tool limits, and automate full-page shots with ScreenshotNeo.
A full-page webpage screenshot includes content below the browser viewport. On Windows, the directly documented Microsoft workflow is OneNote Web Clipper: install the browser extension, open the page, choose Full Page, select a OneNote destination, and click Clip. This creates one screenshot image of the current webpage.
A full-screen screenshot is different. Windows Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode captures the entire display, not the part of a webpage that is below the viewport. If you need an automated image file, a PDF, or repeatable captures in a script, use a browser automation tool or an API such as ScreenshotNeo.
Choose the right kind of capture
| Need | Windows option | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| One image containing the whole webpage | OneNote Web Clipper → Full Page | A screenshot image saved to OneNote |
| Editable text and images | OneNote Web Clipper → Article | Editable webpage content in OneNote |
| Everything visible on the monitor | Snipping Tool → Full screen or Print Screen | A static image of the display |
| Printable output | Microsoft Edge → Print (Ctrl+P) | Print or PDF output, depending on the selected printer |
| Repeatable, automated captures | Browser automation or ScreenshotNeo | Image or PDF returned by a request |
Method 1: Capture the entire webpage with OneNote Web Clipper
Microsoft documents the Full Page option as a way to capture the current webpage as a screenshot image. The workflow below follows that documentation.
1. Install the extension
- Open Microsoft’s OneNote Web Clipper instructions.
- Use the Edge or Chrome installation link on that page.
- Select Get or the equivalent browser button, then follow the browser prompts.
- Read the requested permissions before adding the extension. Microsoft says the Web Clipper may ask you to acknowledge security messages and approve application permissions.
2. Sign in and configure access
- Open any webpage in your browser.
- Select the OneNote Web Clipper icon. Its location depends on the browser and whether the extension is pinned.
- Sign in in the popup.
- If prompted, confirm the requested application permissions. Microsoft’s instructions say these permissions can later be changed in your account settings.
3. Capture the full page
- Open the webpage you want to save and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Select the OneNote Web Clipper icon.
- Choose Full Page. Microsoft describes this as capturing the current webpage as a screenshot image and preserving the content as it appears.
- Choose the OneNote notebook and section where the clip should go.
- Add an optional note, then select Clip.
The result is stored in OneNote. This is useful when the destination is a notebook and you want the captured page alongside notes. It is less convenient when you need a local PNG, JPEG, or WebP file for a build pipeline or asset folder.
Full Page versus Region versus Article
- Full Page: captures the current webpage as one screenshot image.
- Region: captures only a selected area of the page as a screenshot image.
- Article: saves the page as editable text and images when the extension identifies article content.
Use Full Page when visual fidelity matters. Use Article when you need to edit or search the content in OneNote. Use Region when the complete page contains unrelated material.
Why Windows Snipping Tool may show only part of the page
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation defines Full screen as capturing the entire screen. The shortcut Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the image capture overlay, and Print Screen copies a static image of the entire display to the clipboard.
Those modes capture what is currently visible on the monitor. They do not document a scrolling webpage mode that includes content below the browser viewport. A tall browser window, zooming out, or taking several overlapping snips can reduce the number of captures, but it does not create a reliable full-page webpage image.
Snipping Tool can annotate, crop, save, share, and extract text from a captured image. Text recognition happens locally according to Microsoft. These actions happen after capture and cannot add webpage content that was outside the original screen area.
Use Microsoft Edge printing when you need a printable page
Printing is a separate goal from creating one screenshot image. In Edge, open the page and press Ctrl+P, or open Settings and more → Print. Select the printer or PDF destination and configure the print settings.
Microsoft also documents Immersive Reader as a clutter-free printing workaround, but it may not be available on every website. If it is available, enter Immersive Reader from the address bar and then open the print dialog. Treat the result as print output: pagination, margins, backgrounds, and layout can differ from a screenshot.
Automate a full-page screenshot on Windows
For scheduled captures, documentation builds, visual regression checks, or a list of URLs, an API avoids keeping a browser window open. ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its full-page capture loads lazy images before taking the shot, and it can also capture a single CSS-selected element.
PowerShell
$query = @{
access_key = "YOUR_API_KEY"
url = "https://stripe.com"
}
$uri = "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?" + ( ($query.GetEnumerator() | ForEach-Object { "$($_.Key)=$([uri]::EscapeDataString($_.Value))" }) -join "&" )
Invoke-WebRequest -Uri $uri -OutFile "shot.webp"
cURL
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete option list and response headers.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', image);
Or skip the browser setup
With ScreenshotNeo, the same capture is one request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before the capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; the response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
ScreenshotNeo includes full-page capture, lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, async webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names also accept those used by other screenshot APIs.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Important capture options for automated jobs
| Requirement | ScreenshotNeo option or approach |
|---|---|
| Page continues below the viewport | Use full-page capture; lazy images are loaded before capture. |
| Only one component is needed | Capture an element with a CSS selector. |
| Site has a dark theme | Enable dark mode or provide custom CSS. |
| Content appears after JavaScript | Wait for a selector, delay, or network idle. |
| Cookie banner or chat bubble obscures content | Leave consent and widget cleanup enabled, or hide selectors explicitly. |
| Authenticated page | Send custom headers, cookies, a user agent, or an Authorization value. |
| Location-sensitive content | Set timezone and geolocation. |
| Repeated URL captures | Choose a cache TTL; cache hits are not billed. |
| Public image tag | Use a signed link. |
| Large batch | Submit up to 100 URLs per bulk call. |
| PDF deliverable | Use PDF output with paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges. |
Troubleshooting
The screenshot contains only the visible browser area
Cause: Snipping Tool captured the display rather than the webpage’s scrollable document.
Fix: Use OneNote Web Clipper’s Full Page mode, or use an automated full-page capture request.
OneNote Web Clipper is not visible
Cause: The extension may be installed but unpinned, or the browser toolbar may hide it.
Fix: Open the browser’s extensions menu, locate OneNote Web Clipper, and pin it. If it is absent, reinstall it from Microsoft’s instructions.
The Web Clipper asks for sign-in or permissions
Cause: Microsoft documents a sign-in popup and possible application-permission confirmation during setup.
Fix: Complete the sign-in and review the requested permissions. Microsoft says you can change the application permissions later in account settings.
The clipped page is missing content
Cause: The page may load sections only after scrolling, require a login, or render content dynamically.
Fix: Wait for the page to finish loading, scroll through important sections before clipping, and verify that you are signed in. For repeatable dynamic pages, use an API wait condition such as a selector or network idle.
The page contains cookie banners, popups, or chat controls
Cause: Overlays are part of the page at capture time.
Fix: Dismiss them before using Web Clipper. In ScreenshotNeo, consent cleanup, popup and chat removal, click actions, custom CSS, and hide selectors can be configured before capture.
The API response is not an image
Cause: The request may have an invalid key, an unreachable URL, or a failed page load.
Fix: Check the HTTP status and response headers, confirm the URL is URL-encoded, and inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed. ScreenshotNeo does not bill bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, or cache hits.
Edge print preview is blank or incorrectly formatted
Cause: Some sites use print styles or page structures that do not render cleanly in print preview.
Fix: Try printing another page to isolate a site-specific issue. If available, open Immersive Reader and print the simplified version. Remember that print output is not the same as a screenshot.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Browser extension: Best for occasional manual captures sent to OneNote. The result depends on the current browser session, page state, sign-in, and extension permissions.
- Snipping Tool: Fast for visible-screen evidence, but it does not include content below the viewport.
- Print to PDF: Suitable for documents and paper-oriented output. Pagination and print CSS can change the visual result.
- API capture: Better for repeatable jobs because the request can specify viewport, device, waits, headers, cookies, blocking, output format, and caching.
- Dynamic pages: Allow time for client-side rendering and lazy assets. A selector or network-idle wait is more deterministic than an arbitrary short delay.
- Long pages: Full-page images can be large. WebP generally reduces transfer size; PDF is often more practical for multi-page documents.
- Repeat captures: Select a cache TTL when the page does not change frequently. ScreenshotNeo identifies cache hits and does not bill them.
- Budget: ScreenshotNeo’s Free plan provides 1,000 screenshots per month without a card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and yearly billing gives two months free.
Checklist for a clean full-page screenshot
- Decide whether you need a webpage image, editable content, a screen image, or a printable document.
- For a manual OneNote capture, install Web Clipper and review its permissions.
- Use Full Page, not Full screen, when you need content below the viewport.
- Wait for dynamic sections and lazy images to appear.
- Dismiss overlays or configure cleanup and hide rules.
- Verify the output at the bottom of the page, not only the first viewport.
- For automation, check the HTTP status and page-verdict headers and save the response as binary data.
FAQ
