How to Take a Screenshot on a German Keyboard
Use Druck, Windows shortcuts, or Mac commands to capture your screen on a German keyboard. Fix Fn, clipboard, and Snipping Tool issues.
On Windows, the German Print Screen key is labeled Druck or Drucken. Press Windows + Druck to save a full-screen capture in Pictures > Screenshots. Press Druck by itself to copy the full screen, then paste it with Ctrl + V. For only the active window, use Alt + Druck.
On a Mac, German keyboard labels do not change the standard screenshot commands: use Umschalt (Shift) + Befehl (Command) + 3 for the whole screen, Umschalt + Befehl + 4 for a selection, and Umschalt + Befehl + 5 for the screenshot and recording toolbar.
Find the Print Screen key on a German keyboard
Look for one of these labels:
- Druck
- PrtSc or PrtScn (common on keyboards sold with English legends)
It may share a key with another function on a compact laptop keyboard. In that case, hold Fn while pressing the key. The exact placement and Fn behavior depend on the keyboard manufacturer.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 shortcuts
| Goal | Keys | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Save the entire screen | Windows + Druck | Saves an image in Pictures > Screenshots. |
| Copy the entire screen | Druck | Copies the capture to the clipboard; paste with Ctrl + V. |
| Copy the active window | Alt + Druck | Copies only the focused window; paste with Ctrl + V. |
| Select a region | Windows + Shift + S | Opens Snipping Tool/screen snipping so you can select a rectangle, window, or full screen. |
| Keyboard without a Print Screen key | Fn + Windows + Space | Microsoft documents this alternative for devices without a PrtScn button. |
Save a full screenshot as a file
- Press Windows + Druck.
- Open File Explorer and choose Pictures, then Screenshots.
- Open, rename, crop, or share the resulting image.

Copy the screen or active window
- For the whole display, press Druck.
- For the focused application, click its title bar and press Alt + Druck.
- Open Paint, an email, a document, or another image-capable app.
- Press Ctrl + V, then save or edit the pasted image.
If nothing appears immediately, the capture may still be on the clipboard. Pasting is the quickest way to check.
Capture a selected area with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen snip from the toolbar.
- Select the area or window.
- Click the notification to annotate and save, or paste the clipboard result with Ctrl + V.
Windows can also assign the Print Screen key to open screen snipping. If pressing Druck opens the snipping overlay, review Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and the setting named Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Microsoft Snipping Tool guidance
macOS with a German keyboard
| Goal | Shortcut | Default result |
|---|---|---|
| Full screen | Umschalt + Befehl + 3 | Saves a screenshot to the desktop. |
| Selected area | Umschalt + Befehl + 4 | Drag to select an area, then release. |
| Window or menu | Umschalt + Befehl + 4, then Space | Click the window or menu to capture it. |
| Screenshot/recording controls | Umschalt + Befehl + 5 | Opens the screenshot and screen-recording toolbar on macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. |
To copy a capture instead of saving it, hold Ctrl with the shortcut. For example, Ctrl + Umschalt + Befehl + 3 copies the full screen to the clipboard. Apple notes that some apps may restrict screenshots. Apple: Bildschirmfoto auf dem Mac aufnehmen
If you use a non-Apple keyboard with macOS, identify the key macOS maps to Command; its printed label may differ from Befehl.
Choose the right method
| Need | Windows | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Saved full-screen file | Windows + Druck | Umschalt + Befehl + 3 |
| Clipboard image | Druck, then Ctrl + V | Add Ctrl to a screenshot shortcut |
| Active window | Alt + Druck | Umschalt + Befehl + 4, then Space |
| Custom region | Windows + Shift + S | Umschalt + Befehl + 4 |
| Screen recording controls | Snipping Tool | Umschalt + Befehl + 5 |
When the shortcut does not work
Druck appears to do nothing
- Press Druck, open Paint, and try Ctrl + V; it may have copied the image without opening a window.
- Try the keyboard’s Fn modifier if Druck shares another key.
- Use Fn + Windows + Space on a device without a dedicated Print Screen key.
- Use Windows + Shift + S as a reliable fallback.
Windows + Druck does not save a file
- Check Pictures > Screenshots rather than the desktop.
- Confirm that Windows is receiving the Windows key and Druck key; an Fn lock or gaming mode can change this.
- Try Snipping Tool and save manually if your Windows build or keyboard utility remaps the shortcut.
Druck opens Snipping Tool unexpectedly
Windows may have enabled Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Disable or keep that setting in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, depending on whether you prefer the overlay or clipboard behavior.
The screenshot is black or incomplete
Some applications, protected video surfaces, remote desktops, and security-sensitive windows can restrict capture. Try capturing the application window with its own export command, or use the operating system’s snipping tool. On macOS, Apple specifically notes that some apps do not permit screenshots.
Only part of the keyboard shortcut works
Compact keyboards often put Druck on an Fn layer. Test Fn + Druck, look for an Fn-lock key, and check the manufacturer’s keyboard utility. Keyboard layouts can also differ between a laptop’s built-in keyboard and an external German keyboard.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a repeatable screenshot of a web page rather than a picture of your current desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options, including full-page and element capture, device presets, dark mode, custom CSS/JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, geolocation, caching, PDFs, bulk jobs, and signed links.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
An MCP server also lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Performance, reliability, and cost notes
- Clipboard captures are immediate; saving, annotating, or uploading adds the time required by the destination app.
- For web captures, full-page pages with lazy-loaded images, network-idle waits, custom scripts, and blocked resources can take longer than a basic viewport shot.
- Use a region or active-window capture when you need a small file. PNG preserves detail; JPEG and WebP are usually smaller.
- Desktop shortcuts are included with Windows and macOS. ScreenshotNeo charges only for clean shots; failed loads, blank pages, bot checks, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing.
