Screenshot on Microsoft Edge Browser
Learn how to capture a full webpage or selected area in Microsoft Edge, fix missing Screenshot controls, and automate captures with ScreenshotNeo.
To screenshot a webpage in Microsoft Edge, open the page, right-click it (or open Settings and more), choose Screenshot, then select the full-page or area capture option shown by your version of Edge. Microsoft previously called this feature Web Capture. If Screenshot is missing, an administrator may have disabled it with the WebCaptureEnabled policy.
Microsoft says Screenshot availability and controls can vary by browser version, device type, and market. The steps below cover the current feature and the built-in alternatives for Windows and macOS.
Take a screenshot of a webpage in Edge
- Open the webpage you want to capture in Microsoft Edge.
- Right-click anywhere on the page and select Screenshot. You can also open Settings and more (the three-dot menu) and choose Screenshot.
- Choose the capture mode available in your Edge build. Edge supports capturing the whole webpage or selecting a portion of it. Older Microsoft instructions may call this Web Capture.
- Select the region if you chose an area capture.
- Use the preview controls to copy or save the result, depending on the options displayed by your version.
Microsoft’s policy documentation lists Ctrl+Shift+S as another way to open Screenshot when the feature is enabled or not configured by policy. See the WebCaptureEnabled policy documentation for the current access paths and administrator behavior.
Full webpage versus selected area
| Capture choice | What it includes | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Full webpage | The page beyond the visible viewport, including content below the fold when Edge can render it | Documentation, articles, receipts, landing pages, and QA evidence |
| Selected area | Only the rectangle or region you select | A chart, error message, component, or section of a page |
A normal screen snip captures pixels currently visible on the display. It does not automatically include the rest of a long webpage. Use Edge’s webpage capture for content below the fold.
When Screenshot or Web Capture is missing
Missing menu entries do not always mean you are using the wrong shortcut. Work and school installations can disable the feature through policy. The WebCaptureEnabled policy controls whether Screenshot appears in the context menu, the Settings and more menu, and the keyboard shortcut. Ask your administrator to review that policy if you cannot change browser settings yourself.
Checklist
- Update Edge, then restart it.
- Check both the page context menu and Settings and more.
- Try Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows when policy allows it.
- Test a normal, non-restricted webpage to rule out page-specific behavior.
- On a managed device, contact IT about the
WebCaptureEnabledsetting.
Microsoft’s feature page warns that availability and functionality vary by device type, market, and browser version. Labels and controls can therefore differ from screenshots in older tutorials. See Microsoft’s Screenshot feature page and its older full-page Web Capture tutorial for version-specific context.
Windows alternatives for visible screen captures
Use Windows Snipping Tool when you need the screen, a window, or a manually selected rectangle rather than a complete webpage.
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose freeform, rectangle, window, or full-screen mode.
- Select the area or window and save the resulting snip.
Windows also supports Print Screen for a full-screen capture. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation describes the available modes and shortcuts.
macOS alternatives
When Edge is running on macOS and you need a system-level capture, Microsoft documents these shortcuts:
| Shortcut | Result |
|---|---|
| Shift+Command+3 | Capture the entire screen |
| Shift+Command+4 | Select a region |
| Shift+Command+4, then Space | Capture a window or menu |
These shortcuts capture the display or a window. They are different from Edge’s webpage capture and generally do not include content below the fold. See Microsoft’s screen clipping guidance.
Edge Screenshot troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot is absent from the menus | The browser is managed and WebCaptureEnabled is disabled, or the build exposes a different interface |
Try the shortcut, update Edge, and ask IT to check the policy |
| Ctrl+Shift+S does nothing | The feature is disabled by policy, the shortcut is intercepted, or the platform/version differs | Open the context menu manually and check policy status |
| The result only shows the visible viewport | A screen snip or selected-area mode was used | Choose Edge’s full webpage capture mode |
| Page content is missing or cut off | The page loads content lazily, requires scrolling, or changes while being captured | Wait for the page to finish loading, scroll through important sections, and retry; for repeatable automation use a capture API with explicit wait controls |
| A login page or private content cannot be captured | The page requires an authenticated session or blocks automation | Capture while signed in locally, or use an API that accepts headers/cookies when you have permission |
| Controls differ from an online tutorial | Microsoft changed the name from Web Capture to Screenshot or the browser version differs | Look for Screenshot in the context menu and Settings and more, then consult Microsoft’s current documentation |
Automating webpage screenshots
Manual Edge capture is useful for occasional work. For documentation builds, visual regression checks, reports, and batch jobs, automation gives you a repeatable URL-to-image workflow. A browser automation script must handle viewport size, page readiness, lazy-loaded content, authentication, consent banners, and failures.
Typical automation decisions
- Target: full page, viewport, or one element.
- Rendering: viewport dimensions, device pixel ratio, dark mode, timezone, and geolocation.
- Readiness: a CSS selector, a fixed delay, or network idle.
- Access: headers, cookies, user agent, or an Authorization header.
- Noise: hide selectors, block ads and trackers, or block selected resource types.
- Output: PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, with resizing and transparent backgrounds where supported.
Reliability and performance practices
- Use a deterministic viewport and scale so diffs are meaningful.
- Wait for a stable selector instead of relying only on a short sleep.
- Set a timeout and record the URL, status, and failure reason.
- Retry transient navigation failures with backoff, but do not retry a permanent bot check indefinitely.
- Cache unchanged pages when freshness permits.
- Keep screenshots at the smallest dimensions and format that meet your review or delivery requirement.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. This request captures a page without installing or configuring a browser:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" \
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY \
--data-urlencode url=https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-browser-policies/webcaptureenabled \
-o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={
"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY",
"url": "https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-browser-policies/webcaptureenabled",
},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({
access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
url: 'https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-browser-policies/webcaptureenabled'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits, request blocking, custom headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which helps when switching.
An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Cost and usage considerations
Edge’s built-in Screenshot and Windows/macOS capture tools do not require a screenshot API subscription. An API becomes useful when you need unattended runs, consistent rendering, batch URLs, PDFs, signed public images, or agent access.
ScreenshotNeo’s plans are: Free (1,000 shots/month), Starter ($5 for 3,000), Growth ($15 for 15,000), Pro ($39 for 60,000), Scale ($99 for 250,000), and Business ($249 for 1,000,000). Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Only clean shots are billed; failed loads and cache hits are not.
FAQ
Is Edge Screenshot the same as Web Capture?
Yes. Microsoft renamed Web Capture to Screenshot. Older help pages may still use the former name.
Can Edge capture an entire long webpage?
Edge’s webpage capture supports a full-page concept, while a normal screen snip captures only what is visible. Exact controls depend on your Edge version.
Why is Screenshot unavailable on my work computer?
Your organization may have disabled it with the WebCaptureEnabled browser policy. Ask your administrator to confirm.
Does Copilot’s screenshot feature replace Edge Screenshot?
No. Microsoft’s Copilot browsing documentation describes screenshots taken as part of a Copilot workflow. That is separate from the ordinary user-facing Screenshot save flow.
What should I use for scheduled or batch captures?
Use an automated browser workflow or a screenshot API. ScreenshotNeo adds waits, cleanup, retries you control, caching, bulk capture, PDFs, webhooks, and MCP tools for agents.
For occasional captures, Edge Screenshot is the quickest path. For repeatable builds and automated systems, start with ScreenshotNeo’s free 1,000-shot plan.
