To screenshot only a photo, use an area capture instead of capturing the entire screen. On Windows, press Windows key + Shift + S, drag around the photo, then save or paste the result. On Mac, press Shift-Command-5, choose area capture, select the photo, and save or copy it.

Choose the right capture method

Your choice affects what appears in the result:

Method What it captures Best use
Area or rectangle Only the region you select Isolating a photo cleanly
Window An application window, often including controls Showing the photo together with its viewer
Full screen Everything visible on a display Documenting the whole desktop

Also decide whether you need a file or a clipboard image. A saved file is easy to find and share later. A clipboard capture is quickest when you plan to paste it into an editor, document, email, or chat.

Windows: capture a photo with Snipping Tool

  1. Open the photo and enlarge it until the important detail is easy to select.
  2. Press Windows key + Shift + S. Windows opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Microsoft documents this shortcut and the tool’s screen-capture modes in its Snipping Tool guide.
  3. Choose rectangular capture, then drag from one corner of the photo to the opposite corner. Leave out browser tabs, viewer controls, and the desktop if you want only the image.
  4. Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to review the capture. Crop or annotate it if needed.
  5. Save it from Snipping Tool, or press Ctrl+V in another application to paste the clipboard copy. Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions also describe pasting a capture with Ctrl+V.

Windows alternatives

Print Screen: Depending on your keyboard and Windows settings, Print Screen may capture the full screen, open Snipping Tool, or copy an image. Microsoft notes that hardware and device configuration can change the available behavior; check its Print Screen shortcut guidance.

Window capture: Use this when the application frame is useful context. It will not usually produce a clean photo-only result, so rectangular area capture is better when the image itself is the goal.

Mac: capture a photo with Screenshot

  1. Open the photo and position it so the complete image is visible.
  2. Press Shift-Command-5 to open macOS screenshot controls. Apple documents this control bar and its selected-area and clipboard options in Take a screenshot on Mac.
  3. Choose the option to capture a selected portion, then drag around the photo.
  4. Capture the selection. macOS normally saves the screenshot as a file; use the clipboard option when you want to paste it directly into another app.
  5. Open the saved image to check its edges and resolution before sharing or editing it.

Mac shortcuts and restrictions

macOS also provides shortcuts for capturing the full screen or a window. Those modes can include menus and controls, so selected-area capture remains the practical choice for a photo-only screenshot. Some applications restrict screenshots. Apple specifically notes that apps such as Apple TV may not allow screenshots of their windows.

Save, copy, and find the result

  • Save a file: Choose the save command in Snipping Tool or use the location shown by macOS screenshot controls. Pick a format appropriate to the next step: PNG preserves sharp text and transparency, while JPEG is smaller for photographs.
  • Copy to the clipboard: Paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or the standard paste command on Mac. Clipboard content may be replaced when you copy something else, so save a file if you need the image later.
  • Check the crop: Open the result at 100% zoom. A selection that is one or two pixels too tight can cut off part of the photo; a loose selection can include browser chrome or a different image.
  • Check privacy: Look for names, notifications, private tabs, or other visible content before sending the screenshot.

Improve quality and framing

  1. Maximize the photo viewer or browser tab before selecting the area.
  2. Hide sidebars, toolbars, comments, and overlays when the viewer supports it.
  3. Use the original image file when you need the source resolution or metadata. A screenshot cannot restore detail that is not visible on screen.
  4. On high-density displays, the saved pixel dimensions may differ from the viewer’s logical size. Inspect the image dimensions if you are preparing it for print or a fixed-size layout.
  5. For a consistent series, use the same viewer zoom, window size, and selection boundaries each time.

When the photo is on a webpage: automate the capture

Keyboard shortcuts capture what is visible on your computer. If the photo is published at a URL and you need repeatable, server-side screenshots, an API removes the need to keep a browser open.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Send one GET request with a URL to receive a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. This is useful when the photo is part of a webpage rather than a local file.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', data);

ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click actions, waits, request blocking, cookies, headers, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

It includes an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
The screenshot includes too much The selection started outside the photo Repeat the area capture with a tighter rectangle. Hide viewer controls first.
The photo is cut off The selection ended inside an edge Leave a small margin, then crop precisely in the saved image.
You cannot find the screenshot It was copied to the clipboard or saved somewhere unexpected Paste into an editor to test the clipboard. Reopen the capture tool and check its save location.
Print Screen behaves differently Keyboard, Windows settings, or device hardware changes the shortcut Use Windows key + Shift + S or consult Microsoft’s Print Screen documentation.
Mac capture does nothing The app may restrict screenshots Try another window or use the app’s export function. Apple identifies some restricted apps, including Apple TV.
The result looks blurry The photo was displayed at a small zoom or the screenshot was enlarged later Display the photo larger before capture and avoid scaling the screenshot beyond its native pixels.
An automated webpage shot is blank The page failed to load, timed out, or presented a bot check Inspect ScreenshotNeo’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers, then adjust waits, headers, cookies, user agent, or blocking options.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • For a one-off local capture, the built-in Windows or Mac shortcut is fastest and has no service cost.
  • For repeated webpage captures, reuse a chosen viewport and cache TTL when content does not change. Cache hits are not billed by ScreenshotNeo.
  • Use selector capture when you need one image from a complex page; use full-page capture when below-the-fold content matters.
  • Wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle when images render asynchronously. Blocking unnecessary ads, trackers, or resource types can reduce page work.
  • For many URLs, submit a bulk request of up to 100 URLs or use asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks.
  • Keep API keys on the server. Signed links are available when a public <img> tag needs temporary access.

FAQ

Can I screenshot only part of a photo?

Yes. Drag a smaller rectangle around the subject or detail. For a webpage API, use ScreenshotNeo’s element capture with a CSS selector when the image is in its own element.

Does a screenshot preserve the original photo file?

No. It records the pixels displayed on screen. Use the original download or export when you need full resolution, metadata, or the original compression.

Why is area capture preferable to full-screen capture?

It excludes unrelated desktop content and viewer controls, producing a cleaner image with less cropping afterward.

Can I capture a protected streaming image?

Some applications intentionally block screenshots. Follow the application’s export or download feature and any applicable access rules.

Which operating systems are covered here?

The documented shortcuts in this guide are for Windows and macOS. Linux shortcuts vary by desktop environment and distribution.
