How to Screenshot a Section of a Web Page on Windows

Capture any visible section of a webpage on Windows with Snipping Tool or Edge Screenshot, plus automated options for developers.

To screenshot a visible section of a webpage on Windows, press Windows key + Shift + S, choose Rectangular snip, and drag around the section. The capture opens in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, copy, crop, save, or share it.

1. Capture a visible webpage section with Snipping Tool

  1. Open the webpage and scroll until the section you need is visible.
  2. Press Windows + Shift + S. Windows dims the screen and opens the Snipping Tool overlay.
  3. Select Rectangular capture.
  4. Drag from one corner of the section to the opposite corner, then release.
  5. Select the Snipping Tool notification to review the image.
  6. Use the toolbar to annotate, crop, copy, save, or share the result.

The shortcut captures pixels currently visible on your display. Browser zoom, Windows display scaling, and the size of the browser window therefore affect the captured area. For a clean result, close menus and hover states before selecting.

Capture an irregular shape

Open the Snipping Tool overlay with Windows + Shift + S, choose Freeform, and draw around the shape. Freeform capture is useful for isolating a diagram or another non-rectangular area, but the saved image follows your outline rather than the page layout.

Capture a window or the entire screen

Snipping Tool also offers window and full-screen capture modes. Use window capture when you want the complete browser window, including its borders. Use full-screen capture when several windows or monitors must appear in one image.

2. Capture a section directly in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the page in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + S, or open Screenshot from the page context menu or Edge’s Settings and more menu.
  3. Choose Capture area.
  4. Drag over the webpage section.
  5. Choose Copy or Markup, then save the result after reviewing it.

Edge’s Screenshot feature is designed for webpage captures and also includes Capture full page when content below the fold is required. The feature was previously called Web Capture. On managed computers, an administrator can disable it; if the menu or shortcut is missing, use Snipping Tool instead or ask your administrator.

3. Choose the right Windows method

Need Use Reason
Visible rectangular area from any app Windows + Shift + S Fast system-wide selection
Irregular visible shape Snipping Tool Freeform Draw a custom outline
Section of a webpage in Edge Edge Screenshot → Capture area Browser-integrated capture and markup
Content below the fold Edge Screenshot → Capture full page Captures a long webpage

4. Make the capture readable

  • Scroll the target section fully into view before starting.
  • Dismiss cookie banners, chat bubbles, and newsletter popups when they cover the content.
  • Set browser zoom to a level that keeps the complete section visible.
  • Move the pointer away from buttons that show hover tooltips.
  • Use PNG for diagrams and text; JPEG is smaller for photographs.
  • After capture, crop browser chrome or unrelated margins in Snipping Tool.

5. When a screen capture is not enough

Snipping Tool and Edge capture what is rendered on your screen. They are not selectors, so repeating a capture across many pages requires manual work. A browser automation script can target a CSS element, wait for dynamic content, emulate a device, or save a full-page image.

PowerShell with Playwright (automated element capture)

Install Playwright for .NET, then run this script from PowerShell. Replace the URL and selector with the page and section you need.

dotnet add package Microsoft.Playwright
pwsh bin/Debug/net8.0/playwright.ps1 install chromium

# Save as capture.ps1 and run with: pwsh ./capture.ps1
$url = "https://example.com"
$selector = "main article"

node -e @'
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async() => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 }, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
  await page.goto(process.env.CAPTURE_URL, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.locator(process.env.CAPTURE_SELECTOR).screenshot({ path: 'section.png' });
  await browser.close();
})();
'@

Set CAPTURE_URL and CAPTURE_SELECTOR in your shell before running the Node command. Element screenshots avoid manually measuring coordinates, but the selector must exist and the page must finish rendering.

6. Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API when you need repeatable captures from Windows scripts, CI, or backend jobs. It can capture a CSS-selected element, full pages with lazy images, custom viewports and device presets, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resource types, headers, cookies, user agents, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk requests, PDFs, and HTML/CSS images.

Before the capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

There is a free plan with 1,000 screenshots per month and no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem Cause Fix
The overlay does not appear Shortcut intercepted or Snipping Tool unavailable Open Snipping Tool from Start, then choose New. Check keyboard and Windows updates.
Edge Screenshot is missing Feature disabled by browser policy or version Use Windows + Shift + S, update Edge if permitted, or contact the administrator.
Part of the section is cut off Content extends below the viewport Scroll and capture in pieces, or use Edge Capture full page or an automated tool.
A popup covers the content Consent, newsletter, or chat overlay Close it before capture, use reader mode where appropriate, or use ScreenshotNeo’s cleanup.
Text looks blurry Low display scale, zoom, or compressed format Increase browser zoom, capture at a larger viewport, and save as PNG.
Automation cannot find the element Selector is wrong or content loads later Inspect the DOM, wait for the selector, and account for iframes or shadow DOM.

8. Performance, reliability, and cost

  • Manual speed: Snipping Tool is fastest for one visible section.
  • Repeatability: Browser automation or ScreenshotNeo is better for scheduled or multi-page captures.
  • Dynamic pages: Wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle before capturing.
  • Long pages: Full-page capture may trigger lazy loading; verify that images and charts have rendered.
  • API cost: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Failed loads, blank pages, bot checks, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing, and X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed explain each response.
  • Caching: Choose a cache TTL when the page does not change frequently to reduce repeated work.

9. FAQ

Can I screenshot only part of a webpage?

Yes. Use Windows + Shift + S with Rectangular capture, Edge Screenshot’s Capture area, or an element selector in automation.

How do I capture content below the screen?

Use Edge Screenshot → Capture full page, or an automated full-page screenshot tool.

Does Snipping Tool capture a webpage’s hidden content?

No. It captures visible pixels. Scroll the content into view or use full-page capture.

Can an administrator disable Edge Screenshot?

Yes. Managed Edge policies can disable the feature; Snipping Tool remains an alternative unless Windows policy also restricts it.

What is the simplest automated option?

Use ScreenshotNeo’s single GET request when you do not want to install or maintain a browser.
