How to Screenshot a Single Window in Windows 11
Capture one Windows 11 window with Snipping Tool or Alt + Print Screen, then save it, troubleshoot failures, and automate website shots.
Use Windows + Shift + S, choose Window, then click the window. Windows 11 copies that window into Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, save, or share it. If the window is already focused, Alt + Print Screen copies only the active window; paste it with Ctrl + V.
1. The quickest answer
| What you need | Shortcut | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Choose any visible window | Windows + Shift + S → Window | Select a window in the Snipping Tool overlay; it opens in the editor and is copied to the clipboard. |
| Capture the focused window | Alt + Print Screen | Only the active window is copied to the clipboard. |
Use Window mode when you want to pick a window explicitly or edit the result. Use Alt + Print Screen when the correct window already has focus and you want a fast copy.
2. Capture one window with Snipping Tool
- Arrange the target window so it is visible.
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- On the capture toolbar, select Window.
- Move over and click the window you want. Snipping Tool captures it immediately.
- Open the notification or Snipping Tool editor to annotate, crop, copy, save, or share.
This captures the selected window rather than the whole desktop. If another window overlaps it, make the target visible first so it can be selected.
3. Capture the active window with Alt + Print Screen
- Click the window you want so it becomes active.
- Press Alt + Print Screen. Only the active window goes to the clipboard.
- Open Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable app.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste it.
- Save the pasted image from that app.
Windows defines the active window as the one you are currently working in; only one window can be active at a time. This method does not create a file until you paste and save it.
4. Save, edit, and find the screenshot
- Snipping Tool: use the editor controls to annotate, crop, copy, save, or share. The current Windows workflow also automatically saves a captured snip in the Screenshots folder; use Save as when you need another name or location.
- Alt + Print Screen: paste into Paint or another destination, then use that app’s save command.
- Default folder: saved Windows screenshots are normally under
Pictures\Screenshots. If you used Save as, the chosen location takes precedence.
5. If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Use Windows + Shift + S and choose Window; it does not require a dedicated Print Screen key. On some hardware, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar as the screenshot combination when no PrtScn button is present. Laptop labels and keyboard layouts vary.
6. Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Alt + Print Screen appears to do nothing | The image is on the clipboard, not saved as a file. | Open Paint, Word, email, or another destination and press Ctrl + V, then save. |
| The wrong window was captured | A different window had focus. | Click the target first, then repeat Alt + Print Screen; or use Window mode and click the target explicitly. |
| The whole screen was captured | Full-screen capture was selected instead of Window. | Open Windows + Shift + S and choose Window. |
| No Snipping Tool overlay appears | The shortcut was mistyped or a utility intercepted it. | Press the three keys together again. You can also open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and choose its window capture mode. |
| There is no PrtScn key | Your laptop keyboard omits or layers the key. | Use Window mode, or try the documented Fn + Windows + Space Bar combination. |
| The screenshot is not in Pictures\Screenshots | You used clipboard capture or chose a different Save as location. | Paste the clipboard image into an app and save it, or check the path shown by Save as. |
| A menu or tooltip disappeared | Opening the overlay changed focus. | Use Snipping Tool Window mode and prepare the target before opening the overlay; for transient UI, consider capturing the active window immediately with Alt + Print Screen. |
7. Which method should you use?
| Need | Recommended method |
|---|---|
| Select a specific visible window | Snipping Tool Window mode |
| Copy the already focused window in one step | Alt + Print Screen |
| Annotate, crop, or share immediately | Snipping Tool Window mode |
| Save a file from clipboard capture | Paste into Paint or another app, then save |
| No Print Screen key | Windows + Shift + S → Window |
8. Or skip the browser setup
If the “window” you need is a website, you can capture the page through ScreenshotNeo instead of arranging a local desktop window. It is a website screenshot API; one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API docs for the options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

9. Reliability, performance, and cost notes
- Keyboard captures are local and immediate, but they depend on clipboard state and the active window.
- Snipping Tool is better for repeatable selection and editing; Alt + Print Screen has fewer steps when focus is correct.
- For websites captured through an API, page load time, waiting rules, blocked resources, and cache settings affect completion time. ScreenshotNeo supports waiting for a selector, a delay, or network idle; blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; custom headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, and geolocation; full-page and element captures; and caching with a TTL you choose.
- ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, which helps when a URL is unreliable or already cached.
10. FAQ
Does Alt + Print Screen capture only one window?
Yes. It copies the active window, not the entire desktop. Paste with Ctrl + V.
Where is a Snipping Tool window capture saved?
It is copied to the clipboard and opened in the editor. Windows also automatically saves captured snips in the Screenshots folder; Save as lets you choose another path.
Can I capture a window that is behind another window?
Window mode requires the target to be visible for selection. Bring it forward or arrange windows before capturing.
What if I need a screenshot of a web page rather than my desktop window?
Use a browser capture API such as ScreenshotNeo when you need a repeatable URL-based image or PDF, especially in scripts or AI-agent workflows.
