Taking a Screenshot of a User-Defined Area

Capture only the part of your screen you need on Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook, with shortcuts, saving tips, troubleshooting, and an API option.

To capture only part of your screen, use your operating system’s area-selection shortcut:

  • Windows: press Windows+Shift+S, choose Rectangle or Freeform, then drag over the area.
  • macOS: press Shift+Command+4, drag the crosshair over the area, and release.
  • GNOME Linux: press Print, choose area selection, adjust the handles, and capture.
  • Chromebook: open Screen Capture, choose Partial screenshot, select the region, and capture.

The result normally goes to your clipboard, a default folder, or both. The sections below explain each workflow, how to select accurately, where files are saved, and what to do when a capture does not work.

Windows: capture a rectangular or freeform area

Windows 11 and current Windows versions include Snipping Tool. Microsoft documents Rectangle, Freeform, Window, Full screen, and Video snip modes. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide describes Rectangle mode as selecting a rectangular area.

Quick rectangular screenshot

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  2. Choose Rectangle in the overlay toolbar.
  3. Click and drag from one corner of the required area to the opposite corner.
  4. Release the mouse button.
  5. Use the notification to open the capture, annotate it, copy it, save it, or share it.
Windows + Shift + S
Choose Rectangle
Drag around the area
Release to capture

Capture an irregular shape

Choose Freeform instead of Rectangle, then draw around the content. Freeform is useful when the subject is not rectangular, but rectangular selections are usually easier to crop, compare, and place in documents.

Capture a menu that disappears

Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, set Delay to one to five seconds, open the menu during the countdown, and then select the area. Delay is useful for context menus, hover states, and tooltips.

Save, copy, or annotate

The captured image can be copied directly to another application or opened in Snipping Tool. From there you can annotate, crop, save, share, and use local text recognition. If you only need to paste the image once, use the clipboard instead of creating a file.

macOS: select a portion of the screen

Press Shift+Command+4. The pointer becomes a crosshair. Drag across the area and release. Apple documents this workflow in Take a screenshot on Mac.

Adjust or cancel the selection

  • Press Escape before releasing to cancel.
  • Hold Space while dragging to move the selection box without changing its size.
  • Hold Shift while resizing to adjust one edge at a time, depending on the current drag direction.

Choose where the screenshot goes

Press Shift+Command+5 to open the Screenshot app. Its Options menu controls the timer, save location, floating thumbnail, and pointer visibility. By default, screenshots are saved to the desktop. Hold Control with the shortcut when you want the result copied to the clipboard instead of saved as a file.

Use a timer for transient content

In the Screenshot app, choose a five- or ten-second timer, open the menu or hover state you need, and let the capture run. Some protected apps, including Apple TV, can block window screenshots.

GNOME Linux: select an area with the screenshot overlay

Press Print or open the screenshot control from the system menu. The GNOME overlay provides handles and a crosshair for choosing an area. Drag the handles, then press the capture button. GNOME explains the workflow in GNOME Screenshot help.

Keyboard controls

S Select an area
C Capture the screen
W Capture a window
Enter Capture
Space Capture
Ctrl+C Copy the capture

GNOME saves captures in Pictures/Screenshots with a timestamped filename and copies the image to the clipboard. If the file is not where you expect, check that directory and your desktop environment’s screenshot settings.

Chromebook: take a partial screenshot

Press the dedicated Screenshot key if your Chromebook has one. Otherwise open Quick Settings and select Screen Capture, or press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows. On external keyboards without a Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl+Shift+F5 as an alternative.

  1. Choose Screenshot.
  2. Select Partial screenshot.
  3. Drag over the region.
  4. Release to capture.

Chromebook screenshots are copied to the clipboard automatically. Files are saved in Downloads unless you choose another folder. See Google’s Chromebook screenshot instructions for the current controls.

How to select an area accurately

  1. Start outside the content. Begin just beyond the first pixel you need, then refine the opposite corner.
  2. Include context deliberately. Keep a small margin when the image will be used in documentation; remove the margin for pixel comparisons.
  3. Use the same scale each time. Display scaling and browser zoom change the number of pixels captured.
  4. Check the final image. Open or paste it before closing the source window to confirm that no controls, cursor, or notification was included.
  5. Use a delay for moving UI. Menus and hover states can disappear while you position the selection.

Clipboard versus saved image

Need Best output Why
Paste into chat, a document, or an issue Clipboard Fast and avoids temporary files.
Attach later or archive Saved PNG Preserves the capture for reuse.
Small file for a website JPEG or WebP after export Usually smaller, with possible quality loss.
Pixel-perfect UI comparison PNG at a fixed scale Avoids lossy compression and inconsistent dimensions.

When a local screenshot is not enough

Operating-system shortcuts capture the display in front of you. They do not reliably capture a page at a fixed viewport, wait for lazy-loaded content, remove consent banners, or run unattended across many URLs. For browser-based captures, an API can create the image from the page itself.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It can capture a full page or one element selected by CSS, load lazy images, set a viewport or device preset, use retina scale, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, and apply custom CSS or JavaScript. It can also hide selectors, block ads or requests, set cookies and headers, choose timezone or geolocation, resize images, cache results with a chosen TTL, and submit asynchronous jobs.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting

Problem Cause Fix
The shortcut does nothing A different app or keyboard layout owns the shortcut. Open the screenshot tool from the system menu or Start menu, then check keyboard settings.
The selection is the wrong size Display scaling, browser zoom, or an imprecise drag. Set a consistent scale, zoom, and drag from corner to corner. Use the tool’s handles when available.
A menu disappears The menu closes when focus changes. Use Windows Snipping Tool Delay, the macOS Screenshot timer, or start the Chromebook/GNOME overlay before opening the menu.
The image is missing after capture It was copied to the clipboard or saved in a default folder you did not check. Paste into an image editor, then check Desktop, Downloads, or Pictures/Screenshots for the platform.
A protected video window is black Content protection can block screenshots. Use an approved export or still-image feature from the service. Do not attempt to bypass content protection.
ScreenshotNeo returns an error Invalid access key, inaccessible URL, or a page that failed to load. Check the key and URL, inspect the HTTP status and X-Page-Verdict/X-Billed headers, and retry with an appropriate wait condition.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • For one-off work, native capture is immediate and has no service cost.
  • For repeatable browser captures, fix the viewport, device scale, wait condition, and output format so results are comparable.
  • Waiting for a selector or network idle improves completeness but increases capture time. A short delay is useful for animations and menus.
  • Use caching when the page can tolerate a chosen TTL. Use asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks for longer or higher-volume workflows.
  • Bulk capture supports up to 100 URLs per call. Keep API keys server-side rather than exposing them in public browser code.
  • Only clean ScreenshotNeo shots are billed. Failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and cache hits do not consume billed shots.

FAQ

Can I capture a non-rectangular area?

Yes. Windows Snipping Tool provides Freeform mode. The other documented platform workflows primarily select rectangular regions.

Where do screenshots go on Windows?

A Snipping Tool capture can be copied or saved from its notification or editor. The exact location depends on where you choose to save it.

Can I capture only one element on a webpage?

Yes, with a browser-aware service such as ScreenshotNeo, which supports selecting one element by CSS selector. Native desktop shortcuts capture pixels from the display rather than a DOM element.

How do I automate area captures?

Use a browser automation library to open the page, set a viewport, select or clip a region, and save the image, or use ScreenshotNeo when you need a hosted API, cleaning of consent UI, billing verdicts, or MCP access for AI agents.
