How to Screenshot a Website on Windows when the Page Requires Login
Sign in normally, then use Windows Snipping Tool to capture the page you can see. Learn which shortcut to use, where screenshots go, and how to handle sensitive details.
To screenshot a website that requires login on Windows, sign in normally, open the page you are permitted to capture, and press Windows + Shift + S. Choose a snipping mode, select the visible content, then review and save the image in Snipping Tool. This captures what is displayed on your screen; it does not bypass a login or other access control.
Capture the logged-in page with Snipping Tool
- Sign in to the website through its normal sign-in process.
- Navigate to the page or content you are allowed to capture. Wait until the part you need is visible.
- Press Windows + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Choose a mode: rectangle, window, full screen, or freeform. For most pages, select a rectangle around the content you need.
- Complete the snip. Open the capture in Snipping Tool to annotate, crop, copy, or save it.
A selected area is useful when the browser also shows tabs, account details, or other content you do not want in the image. Check the edges of the selection before sharing.
Use the full-screen keyboard shortcut
To save a full-screen screenshot directly, press Windows + PrtScn on supported hardware. Windows saves the image in Pictures > Screenshots.
If your device has no PrtScn key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar as an alternative. The exact key layout can vary by device.
Choose the right capture method
| Method | What it captures | Where the result goes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | A selected area, window, full screen, or freeform region | Snipping Tool, where you can edit and save | Capturing only the relevant part of a page |
| Windows + PrtScn | The full screen | Pictures > Screenshots | A quick full-screen image on supported hardware |
| Fn + Windows + Space Bar | The full screen on devices without a PrtScn key | Use the device’s available screenshot flow | Keyboard layouts that omit PrtScn |
Microsoft documents the Snipping Tool modes, capture overlay, and editing flow in its Snipping Tool screenshot instructions. Its print-screen shortcut guidance covers the full-screen shortcuts and Screenshots folder.
Review privacy and site restrictions
Before sending or publishing a screenshot, inspect the entire image. Crop or redact account names, email addresses, phone numbers, messages, tokens, payment details, and other information that should not be disclosed. Snipping Tool has editing features, including text recognition tools that can help redact some recognized email addresses and phone numbers, but do not assume every sensitive detail will be detected or removed automatically.
A screenshot records content rendered on the screen. A website, browser, or application may impose its own restrictions on particular content, including protected media. Follow those restrictions; do not try to circumvent them. Only capture pages and information you are authorized to access and share.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S does nothing | The shortcut may not be responding or Snipping Tool may not be available as expected. | Open Snipping Tool from Start and use its capture controls. Microsoft documents freeform, rectangle, window, and full-screen choices. |
| Windows + PrtScn does not save an image | The device may not support that key combination, or it may have no PrtScn key. | Try Fn + Windows + Space Bar on a device without PrtScn, or use Snipping Tool. |
| The screenshot includes browser tabs or account details | A full-screen capture includes more than the page content you need. | Use the Snipping Tool overlay and select only the visible region you intend to keep. Review the saved image before sharing. |
| The page is blank, incomplete, or still loading | The page may not have finished rendering when you captured it. | Wait for the permitted content to appear, then capture again. If the site continues to show an error or blank content, follow the site’s normal support process. |
| A page or media item will not appear in the capture | The site or application may restrict screenshots of that content. | Respect the restriction and use an approved export or sharing method if the site provides one. A screen capture does not grant access. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an image from a page your account is authorized to access, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It supports custom cookies and headers, but use only credentials and pages you are permitted to access; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for configuration. The example below captures a public page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', res);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

FAQ
Does taking a screenshot log me in or reveal a password?
No. Sign in through the website first. The screenshot records visible screen content; it does not authenticate you or reveal information you cannot access.
Can I capture an entire long webpage with these Windows shortcuts?
The shortcuts described here capture screen content, such as a selected region or the full screen. They do not document a scrolling capture of a whole page beyond the visible screen.
Where is a Snipping Tool capture saved?
The capture opens in Snipping Tool for editing, copying, and saving. Choose Save there to select a file location. The separate Windows + PrtScn shortcut saves to Pictures > Screenshots.
