How to Take a Screenshot of a YouTube Video
Pause the video, use your device’s built-in screenshot tool, and save a clean frame on Windows, Mac, iPhone, or Android.
Short answer: pause the YouTube video at the frame you want, then use your device’s built-in screenshot control. Select only the video area when possible so browser tabs, notifications, and playback controls do not appear.
1. The universal method
- Open the YouTube video.
- Seek to the moment you want and pause playback.
- Wait for the playback controls to fade if you want a clean frame.
- Use the screenshot shortcut for your device.
- Crop or annotate the image, then save or share it.
A screenshot records the frame currently displayed on your screen. If the image looks soft, seek a few frames earlier or later and capture again. YouTube’s creator thumbnail tools are for managing thumbnails; they are not a general frame-export button for arbitrary moments in a video.
2. Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture only the video
- Pause the video at the desired frame.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose the rectangular snip mode if it is not already selected.
- Drag around the video frame.
- Open the notification or Snipping Tool window to edit, copy, save, or share the image.
Microsoft documents rectangular, window, and full-screen image captures in Snipping Tool for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Do not confuse Windows + Shift + R, which opens video recording, with the still-image shortcut. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
Capture the whole screen
Press PrtSc to copy a full-screen image to the clipboard, then paste it into an image editor. This includes everything visible on the display, so a selected-area snip is usually cleaner for a YouTube frame.
3. Mac
- Pause the video.
- Press Shift + Command + 5 to open Screenshot controls.
- Choose the full-screen, window, or selected-area capture option.
- Select the video area and capture it.
- Use the thumbnail preview to crop or annotate, or open the saved file from the desktop or configured screenshot folder.
You can also use Shift + Command + 4 for a selected-area screenshot. Apple notes that some apps may restrict screenshots of their windows. If the capture is blocked or blank, try the browser window or another permitted capture mode. See Apple’s Mac screenshot guide.
4. iPhone
- Pause the video at the frame you need.
- Use the standard screenshot button combination for your iPhone model.
- Tap the screenshot preview to crop or mark it up.
- Tap Done, then save to Photos or Files.
The button combination differs between iPhone generations, so use Apple’s current iPhone screenshot instructions for your hardware. If YouTube’s controls are visible, wait briefly after pausing and capture again.
5. Android phones and tablets
- Pause the video on the target frame.
- Use your device’s screenshot button combination or the system screenshot action.
- Open the preview to crop or edit.
- Find the result in the Screenshots album, Google Photos, or your device’s gallery.
Exact steps vary by manufacturer and Android version. If the standard gesture or button combination does not work, follow the handset maker’s support instructions. Google’s Android screenshot help explains the common methods.
6. Get a cleaner, sharper frame
- Use a selected-area capture: exclude browser tabs, address bars, notifications, and other applications.
- Hide controls: pause, move the pointer away, and wait for YouTube’s controls to disappear.
- Use the largest practical player: full-screen playback gives the screenshot more displayed pixels.
- Choose the source quality: increase YouTube’s playback quality before pausing when your connection and display support it.
- Seek nearby: a frame with motion blur may be followed by a sharper one a moment later.
- Crop after capture: leave a small margin while selecting, then make the final crop in the editor.
- Keep the original: save the uncropped screenshot before making edits if you may need it later.
A screenshot cannot contain more detail than the frame rendered by your display. Upscaling after capture may enlarge the file, but it does not restore missing detail.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The image includes playback controls | The screenshot was taken immediately after pausing. | Move the pointer away and wait for the controls to fade, then capture again. |
| The frame is blurry | The selected moment contains motion blur or the player is displaying a low-quality stream. | Seek a few frames, raise playback quality, and capture when the image is sharp. |
| The screenshot is black or blank | The app or browser may restrict capture, or the video has not finished rendering. | Wait for the frame to render, try a selected-area capture, or use another permitted browser window. Some apps restrict screenshots. |
| Windows opens recording controls | Windows + Shift + R was used. | Use Windows + Shift + S for an image snip. |
| The screenshot is not where expected | The device copied the image to the clipboard or used a configured save folder. | Paste it into an image editor, check the screenshot notification, or open Photos, Files, or the configured screenshots folder. |
| Phone buttons do nothing | The button combination differs by model, or one button was pressed too early. | Check the current Apple or Android instructions for the device and press the buttons together. |
| The image is too small | The video was displayed in a small player or the capture area was reduced. | Use full-screen playback, increase the player size, and capture the video area at its displayed resolution. |
8. Copyright and reuse
Saving a frame for personal reference and publishing that frame are different uses. YouTube explains that creators generally own copyright in original videos and that permission, a Creative Commons license, public-domain status, or a copyright exception may apply depending on the work and your location. Giving credit alone does not grant permission.
If you plan to publish, sell, or include the image in another project, check the creator’s permission or license and the copyright rules where you live. See YouTube’s copyright guidance and its thumbnail documentation.
9. Or skip the browser setup
For an automated page capture, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It captures the rendered page rather than exporting an arbitrary YouTube timeline frame, so use the device workflow above when you need an exact paused moment. For repeatable page snapshots, use the API or its custom JavaScript and waiting options documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API docs.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Each response identifies the page verdict and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
10. FAQ
Can YouTube export one frame directly?
YouTube’s documented thumbnail workflow is for creator thumbnails, not a general-purpose frame export control. Pause the video and use your device screenshot tool.
Can I screenshot a video on a phone?
Yes. Pause the video and use the phone’s built-in screenshot action. The exact buttons depend on the iPhone or Android model.
How do I capture only the video?
Use Windows Snipping Tool’s rectangular mode, macOS selected-area capture, or crop the mobile screenshot in the preview editor.
Why is my screenshot low quality?
The screenshot reflects the pixels displayed by the player and screen. Increase playback quality and player size, then capture a sharp moment.
May I publish a screenshot from someone else’s video?
That depends on permission, licensing, applicable exceptions, and local law. Attribution by itself is not permission.
