How to Fix Snipping Tool Not Popping Up After a Screenshot
Fix a missing Snipping Tool notification or editor window on Windows with targeted notification, Do Not Disturb, repair, and reset steps.
“Snipping Tool not popping up after a screenshot” can mean two different problems: the notification banner is missing, or the Snipping Tool editor window does not open. Identify which one failed first, then use the matching fix.
1. Identify what is missing
Take a test snip with Windows+Shift+S. If the selection works but no alert appears, troubleshoot notifications. If the capture completes but no editor window opens, launch or repair Snipping Tool.
| Symptom | Likely area to check |
|---|---|
| No banner, but the screenshot was captured | Notifications, app banners, Notification Center, or Do Not Disturb |
| No Snipping Tool editor window | Launch the app directly, then use Repair or Reset |
| Nothing happens after Windows+Shift+S | Capture shortcut, app availability, or Windows/app state |
Microsoft documents that a completed snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window and that a notification appears after capture. Those are separate pieces of the experience, so a missing banner does not necessarily mean the screenshot failed.
2. Restore a missing notification banner
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Make sure notifications are enabled globally.
- In the app list, select Snipping Tool.
- Enable Snipping Tool notifications and Show notification banners.
- Take another test snip.
Windows can deliver a notification to Notification Center without showing a banner. Open Notification Center by selecting the taskbar clock or bell, or press Windows+N. If the Snipping Tool alert is there, capture is working and only banner delivery needs adjustment.
Check Do Not Disturb
Do Not Disturb sends most notifications to Notification Center instead of displaying banners. Turn it off temporarily while testing, or allow Snipping Tool through the priority-notification settings if Do Not Disturb must remain enabled.
Use this notification checklist
- Global Windows notifications are on.
- Snipping Tool notifications are on.
- Show notification banners is enabled for Snipping Tool.
- Notification Center does not already contain the alert.
- Do Not Disturb is off, or Snipping Tool is allowed through priority settings.
3. Reopen the Snipping Tool editor
If the screenshot is captured but the editor does not appear, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it directly. Capture again after the app is open.
If the window still does not appear:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Snipping Tool.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair if that option is available.
- Test another snip.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset.
Repair attempts to fix the app while retaining its data. Reset is a stronger recovery step and can clear app data. Microsoft notes that Repair and Reset are not available for every app, and wording can vary by Windows version.
4. Keep capturing while you diagnose the problem
You can continue taking screenshots even while the notification or editor is being fixed:
- Windows+Shift+S: opens the snipping overlay.
- Print Screen: provides another Windows capture shortcut.
- Ctrl+C: copies a capture when it is open in Snipping Tool.
- Ctrl+S: saves a capture when the Snipping Tool window is available.
5. Troubleshooting common errors
| What you see | Cause to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot exists, but there is no pop-up | App notification or banner setting is disabled | Enable notifications and Show notification banners for Snipping Tool. |
| The alert is missing from the desktop but appears in Notification Center | Do Not Disturb or banner delivery rules | Turn off Do Not Disturb or allow Snipping Tool through priority settings. |
| The overlay captures, but no editor opens | Snipping Tool is not launching correctly | Open the app from Start, then use Repair and, if needed, Reset. |
| There is no Repair or Reset button | Your Windows/app version does not expose those options | Launch Snipping Tool directly and use the keyboard capture and save/copy shortcuts. |
| Windows+Shift+S does nothing | The shortcut or Snipping Tool process is unavailable | Open Snipping Tool from Start, then try the shortcut again. |
| UI labels differ from these steps | Windows 10/11 or app-version differences | Look for the equivalent Notifications, Advanced options, Repair, or Reset controls. |
6. A reliable diagnosis sequence
- Take one test snip.
- Decide whether the missing item is the banner or the editor window.
- For a missing banner, check global notifications, Snipping Tool banners, Notification Center, and Do Not Disturb.
- For a missing editor, launch Snipping Tool directly.
- Use Repair, then Reset if necessary and available.
- Retest after each change so you know which setting resolved the issue.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots in an application or automation workflow instead of the Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

7. Performance, reliability, and cost notes
- For local troubleshooting, change one Windows setting at a time and retest.
- Notification Center can confirm that capture completed even when a banner is suppressed.
- Repair should be attempted before Reset because Reset can clear app data.
- For automated web captures, ScreenshotNeo supports caching with a TTL you choose, async jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API.
- ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing.
FAQ
Why does Snipping Tool capture an image but show no pop-up?
The notification banner may be disabled, routed to Notification Center, or suppressed by Do Not Disturb. Check those settings first.
Does Windows+N open the Snipping Tool?
No. Windows+N opens Notification Center, where a hidden Snipping Tool notification may be waiting.
Should I Repair or Reset first?
Choose Repair first when it is available. Use Reset if Repair is unavailable or ineffective.
Can I save a screenshot without the editor appearing?
Use the capture overlay and copy the result when available, or open Snipping Tool directly and save with Ctrl+S.
Are these steps identical on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
The settings names and locations can vary. The notification, Do Not Disturb, launch, Repair, and Reset concepts apply to both, while Windows 10 and Windows 11 may show different labels.
