How to Use the Snipping Tool Shortcut to Take a Screenshot

Press Windows + Shift + S to capture a region, window, or full screen, then edit and save it with Snipping Tool.

By the ScreenshotNeo team1 October 20266 min read

Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Windows dims the desktop and opens the Snipping Tool overlay. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture. After you select the area, the image is copied to the clipboard, and a notification lets you open it in Snipping Tool to mark up, crop, save, or share it.

For the official shortcut reference, see Microsoft’s Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

1. The Snipping Tool shortcuts at a glance

Shortcut Captures Result
Windows + Shift + S A selected region, window, or full screen Copied to the clipboard; notification opens the capture in Snipping Tool
Print Screen The entire screen Copied to the clipboard
Alt + Print Screen The active window Copied to the clipboard
Windows + Print Screen The entire screen Saved as an image in Pictures\Screenshots
Windows + Shift + R A selected area as video Starts the Snipping Tool video overlay; stop and save when finished

2. How to take a screenshot with Windows + Shift + S

  1. Arrange the desktop so the content you want is visible.
  2. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  3. When the screen dims, choose a capture mode from the overlay: rectangular, freeform, window, or full screen.
  4. For rectangular or freeform mode, drag around the target. For window mode, click the window. For full-screen mode, select the full-screen option.
  5. Use the notification that appears to open the image in Snipping Tool.
  6. Add ink or a highlighter, crop the image, use Text actions when available, then save or share it.

The initial capture is placed on the clipboard, so you can also open an app such as Paint, an email composer, or a document and press Ctrl + V.

3. Choosing the right capture mode

Rectangular snip

Drag a rectangle around a precise part of the screen. This is the fastest option for a dialog, chart, code fragment, or part of a webpage.

Freeform snip

Draw an irregular outline with the mouse, pen, or touch input. Pixels outside the outline are excluded from the capture.

Window snip

Select a visible application window. Use this when you need the whole browser, terminal, or editor window without manually tracing its edges.

Full-screen snip

Capture every visible display at once. This is useful for documenting a complete desktop state or a multi-window layout.

4. Capturing menus and temporary interface states

Menus often close as soon as you press a shortcut. Use Snipping Tool’s delay setting instead:

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Open the Delay menu.
  3. Choose a delay from one to five seconds.
  4. Start the snip, open the menu or tooltip during the countdown, and select the area when the screen dims.

A delay also helps when you need to expand a context menu, open a notification, or move the pointer out of the way before capture.

5. Where the screenshot goes

  • Windows + Shift + S: the image is copied to the clipboard. The notification opens it in Snipping Tool for editing and saving.
  • Print Screen: the full-screen image is copied to the clipboard.
  • Alt + Print Screen: the active-window image is copied to the clipboard.
  • Windows + Print Screen: Windows saves a file in the Pictures\Screenshots folder.

If you cannot find a Windows + Shift + S capture, paste it into Paint or another image-capable application, or select the notification to open Snipping Tool and save a file.

6. Editing, saving, and sharing

Open the capture from the notification to use Snipping Tool’s editing tools. You can add ink or highlighting, crop the image, and use Text actions when available. Save the result from Snipping Tool, or paste the clipboard copy directly into another application.

Save a copy when the screenshot is evidence for a bug report, documentation, or support ticket. Clipboard contents can be replaced by the next copy operation.

7. Troubleshooting the shortcut

Nothing happens when I press Windows + Shift + S

  • Press all three keys together and release them once the overlay appears.
  • Open Snipping Tool from Start to confirm the app is available.
  • Check whether another utility has remapped the Windows or Print Screen keys.
  • Restart Snipping Tool or Windows if the overlay is unresponsive.

The screenshot is not saved automatically

Windows + Shift + S copies the image and shows a notification; it does not use the same automatic file workflow as Windows + Print Screen. Open the notification and save the image, or paste it into an image editor.

I need to capture one window

Press Windows + Shift + S, choose window snip, and click the target window. For a direct clipboard shortcut, use Alt + Print Screen.

A menu disappears before I capture it

Open Snipping Tool first and use a one-to-five-second delay. The countdown gives you time to open the menu before selecting the capture area.

My keyboard has no Print Screen key

On hardware without a PrtScn key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar as a possible alternative, depending on the device.

Windows lets you change Print Screen behavior in Settings. If the key opens screen snipping, use Windows + Print Screen for a saved full-screen file, or adjust the Print Screen setting to match your workflow.

8. Or skip the browser setup

For a webpage screenshot that must run in code or on a server, use ScreenshotNeo instead of maintaining a desktop browser workflow. Its API accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete parameter list.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', data);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

You can also select an element by CSS selector, load lazy images for full-page captures, set a device or viewport, use dark mode and retina scale, add custom CSS or JavaScript, click before capture, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, block ads or resource types, provide headers, cookies, a user agent, authorization, timezone, or geolocation, create PDFs, resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed links, run async jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per call, and read usage through the API.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

9. Reliability and workflow notes

  • Use clipboard shortcuts when you need an immediate paste into another desktop application.
  • Use Windows + Print Screen when you need a file without opening the editor.
  • Use a delay for transient UI instead of trying to hold a menu open while selecting.
  • For repeatable webpage captures, an API avoids display scaling, desktop state, and manual selection differences.
  • When using an API, set a reasonable client timeout, check the HTTP status, and inspect the response verdict and billing headers.
