Quick answer: Press Shift-Command-3 to capture the entire Mac display. Press Shift-Command-4 and drag to capture part of it. Press Shift-Command-4, then Space, to capture a window or menu. Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app with timer, destination, pointer, recording, and editing controls.

These shortcuts work on current macOS versions. Apple documents the Screenshot app workflow for macOS Mojave 10.14 and later in its Mac screenshot instructions.

Capture the entire Mac screen

  1. Press and release Shift-Command-3 together.
  2. Wait for the floating thumbnail, if it is enabled, or let macOS save the file automatically.
  3. Click the thumbnail to mark up or crop the image, or leave it untouched and use the saved file.

The default filename follows the form Screen Shot [date] at [time]. The default destination is the desktop.

Capture part of the screen

  1. Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
  2. Click and drag over the region you need.
  3. Release the mouse or trackpad button to capture it.
  • Press Escape before releasing to cancel.
  • Hold Space while dragging to move the selected rectangle without changing its size.
  • Hold Shift while resizing to adjust one edge at a time after starting a selection.

Capture a window or menu

Window

  1. Bring the window to the front.
  2. Press Shift-Command-4, then press and release Space.
  3. When the pointer becomes a camera, click the window.

Hold Option while clicking if you want to omit the window shadow.

  1. Open the menu so its contents are visible.
  2. Press Shift-Command-4, then Space.
  3. Click the menu.

Press Escape at any point to cancel.

Use the Screenshot app

Press Shift-Command-5, or open Applications > Utilities > Screenshot. The panel lets you choose full-screen, window, or selected-area capture and also provides screen recording controls.

Useful Options settings

  • Save to: choose Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, Preview, or another location when available.
  • Timer: add a delay so you can open a menu, position a pointer, or prepare a screen.
  • Show floating thumbnail: turn the preview on or off.
  • Remember last selection: keep the previous region for repeated captures when supported by your macOS version.
  • Show mouse pointer: include or exclude the pointer in captures and recordings.

Apple’s Screenshot and screen-recording guide documents these panel controls and shortcuts.

Copy a screenshot to the Clipboard

Hold Control as you press a shortcut:

  • Control-Shift-Command-3: copy the full screen.
  • Control-Shift-Command-4: copy a selected area.
  • Control-Shift-Command-4, then Space: copy a window or menu.

Paste with Command-V into Messages, Mail, a document, an image editor, or another app. You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard.

Find, rename, move, and edit the screenshot

  • Find it: check the desktop first, then the location selected in Screenshot > Options.
  • Rename it: select the file in Finder and press Return, or use File > Rename.
  • Move it: drag the floating thumbnail to a folder or document, or move the saved file in Finder.
  • Edit it: click the floating thumbnail before it disappears. Markup tools can draw, add shapes, crop, rotate, and add text.
  • Open in Preview: double-click the saved image for additional annotation, resizing, and export options.

File formats and macOS version details

On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple documents conditional format choices: SDR (Most Compatible) uses PNG, while HDR uses HEIF. This option depends on the Mac model and software version, so do not assume it appears on every Mac.

If you need JPEG or WebP for a website, open the capture in Preview and use File > Export to select another format.

Special cases: multiple displays, menus, and protected apps

  • Multiple monitors: a full-screen capture can include the display arrangement exposed to macOS. Use selected-area or window capture when you need only one display.
  • Retina displays: captures may have more pixels than their on-screen point dimensions. Check the exported dimensions before uploading.
  • Transient menus: open the menu first, then use window/menu capture. A timer can help when a menu closes as you reach for the shortcut.
  • Protected windows: some apps, including Apple TV, may block screenshots of their windows. macOS does not provide a shortcut that bypasses an app’s restriction.

Troubleshooting Mac screenshots

Problem Likely cause Fix
Nothing appears after pressing the shortcut The keys were not pressed together, or shortcuts were changed. Try again with the keys held briefly. Check System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots.
The file is not on the desktop Screenshot’s save destination was changed. Press Shift-Command-5, open Options, and check Save to.
The wrong area was selected The rectangle was released too early. Press Escape and retry. Hold Space while dragging to reposition the rectangle.
A window has an unwanted shadow Window capture includes the shadow by default. Hold Option while clicking the window.
The screenshot pasted nowhere The capture was saved as a file instead of copied. Use Control with the shortcut, then paste with Command-V.
A protected app window is blank or blocked The app prevents screen capture. Use the app’s own export feature or capture an allowed portion of the screen.
The floating thumbnail is missing It is disabled or its delay elapsed. Open Shift-Command-5 > Options and enable Show Floating Thumbnail.

Performance, reliability, and cost

Built-in shortcuts are immediate and require no installation, account, network connection, or subscription. A full-screen capture is usually the fastest choice; the Screenshot panel adds a small setup step in exchange for timers, destination controls, pointer settings, and recording.

For repeatable documentation work, keep a dedicated save folder and use Clipboard capture when the image only needs to be pasted once. For large Retina captures, check file dimensions and format before sending them because image size can affect upload time.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of web pages from a script or build pipeline, ScreenshotNeo provides a single GET request that returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
