Where Are Lightshot Screenshots Saved?

Lightshot saves files to the most recently used folder, or My Documents if none is set. Learn how saving, uploading and copying differ.

Lightshot saves a screenshot to the most recently used folder. If you have not saved a Lightshot capture before, its official instructions say the fallback is My Documents. Use Ctrl+S on Windows or Command+S on Mac to save a local file. Lightshot’s hotkey instructions describe this recent-folder rule.

The exact path on your computer depends on its save history and settings. Lightshot does not use one universal Pictures or Desktop folder for every installation.

Quick answer: where to look

Action Shortcut Result Where to look
Save as a file Ctrl+S (Windows)
Command+S (Mac)
Creates a local image file The folder most recently used for a Lightshot save; otherwise My Documents
Upload Ctrl+D (Windows)
Command+D (Mac)
Uploads the capture and shows a link The completion pop-up and its URL; an account on prntscr.com can be used to find screenshots
Copy Ctrl+C (Windows) Copies the image to the clipboard No file is created until you paste it into an image-capable app and save it

Find a screenshot you saved locally

  1. Open the folder you last chose in Lightshot’s save dialog. Lightshot reuses that folder on later saves.
  2. If this is the first save on the computer, check My Documents.
  3. Sort the folder by Date modified and look for the newest image file.
  4. If you still cannot find it, start another capture, press the save shortcut and read the destination shown by the save interface before confirming.

The official instructions identify the recent-folder behavior, but they cannot reveal the current folder selected on your particular computer. A custom folder, a different Windows or macOS account, or a redirected Documents directory can change the path.

Windows checklist

  • Press Ctrl+S after selecting the area.
  • Check the last folder used in the save dialog.
  • If no folder has been used, open Documents (Lightshot calls this My Documents).
  • Search for recently modified PNG, JPEG or other image files if you changed the filename.

Mac checklist

  • Press Command+S after selecting the area.
  • Check the folder shown by the save interface.
  • If this is the first save, check your Documents folder.
  • Use Finder’s recent-items or date-modified view if you renamed the file.

Save, upload and copy are different operations

Many “missing screenshot” problems happen because the wrong Lightshot action was used.

Save to a file

Ctrl+S on Windows or Command+S on Mac writes an image to disk. Lightshot targets the most recently used folder, with My Documents as the documented fallback.

Upload to prntscr.com

Ctrl+D on Windows or Command+D on Mac starts an upload. The completion pop-up contains a link, so there may be no new local file to find. Lightshot’s FAQ says an account on prntscr.com is required to find all screenshots associated with the service. See the official FAQ for the account requirement.

Copy to the clipboard

Ctrl+C copies the selected capture to the Windows clipboard. Clipboard contents are not files. Paste the image into an editor, document or mail application, then use that application’s Save or Export command to create a file.

What to do when the screenshot is not in the expected folder

  1. Repeat the save and watch the destination. The save interface is the authoritative view of the current folder.
  2. Check the last-used folder. Lightshot remembers the folder from the previous local save.
  3. Check Documents. This is the documented fallback when no previous folder exists.
  4. Determine whether you uploaded instead. Look for the upload completion link or sign in to prntscr.com.
  5. Determine whether you copied instead. Paste into an image application and save a new file.
  6. Check the active operating-system account. Documents folders differ between user accounts and can be redirected by system policy or cloud-sync settings.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No image appears in Pictures or Desktop Lightshot uses the most recent save folder, not a universal folder Repeat Ctrl+S or Command+S and inspect the destination; check that folder and Documents
There is no local file, but a link appeared You used the upload shortcut Open the completion link; use a prntscr.com account to find associated screenshots
Pasting works, but file search finds nothing The capture is only in the clipboard Paste it into an image-capable application and save or export it
The file is in a different user’s Documents folder The capture was saved under another operating-system account Sign in to the account that ran Lightshot and inspect its recent save folder
A second save goes to an unexpected directory The previous save changed Lightshot’s remembered folder Use the save dialog to choose the intended folder, then save again
You cannot recover an uploaded screenshot No account route was used or the upload link was lost Check browser history and the upload completion pop-up; Lightshot’s FAQ points to a prntscr.com account for finding screenshots

Reliability and file-management tips

  • After saving an important capture, note the full path or move the file into a project folder.
  • Use descriptive filenames so date-based sorting is not your only way to identify a capture.
  • For repeatable documentation, keep local saves in a dedicated folder and back it up with your normal file-sync system.
  • Use upload only when you need a shareable link; uploading does not guarantee a local copy.
  • Use clipboard copy for quick pasting, then save explicitly if the image must persist after the clipboard changes.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of URLs in an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. Its capture can remove cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server so Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients can take screenshots.

FAQ

Does Lightshot always save to Pictures?

No. It saves to the most recently used folder, or My Documents when no previous folder exists.

Where are screenshots uploaded with Ctrl+D?

They are online and Lightshot displays a link after upload. Use a prntscr.com account to find screenshots associated with the service.

Can I find a screenshot copied with Ctrl+C?

Not as a file. Paste it into an image-capable application and save it.

How can I know the exact folder on my computer?

Start a new save and inspect the destination shown by Lightshot’s save interface. The exact path is specific to your device’s history and settings.

Does ScreenshotNeo save files to a Lightshot folder?

No. ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API. Your code decides where to write the response, such as shot.webp in the examples above.
