Where Are My Mac Screenshots Saved?
Mac screenshots usually go to the Desktop. Learn how to find them, change the save folder, use the Clipboard, and troubleshoot missing captures.
By default, macOS saves screenshots to your Desktop. The usual filename starts with Screen Shot and includes the date and time, such as Screen Shot 2026-10-01 at 14.32.10.png. If your screenshot is missing, open Screenshot with Shift–Command–5, choose Options, and check the location shown under Save to. Apple lets you choose a preset folder or select Other Location for any folder you can access. See Apple’s screenshot instructions and the Mac user guide.
Find a screenshot on your Mac
- Open Finder by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock.
- Choose Desktop in the Finder sidebar.
- Look for a file beginning with
Screen Shot. Sort by Date Modified if you took the capture recently. - If you use iCloud Desktop and Documents, the file may also be available through iCloud Drive on your other Apple devices.
macOS normally creates an image file immediately after the capture. The exact extension depends on your macOS version and capture settings, so search by the filename prefix or by the date instead of assuming the file is always PNG.
Check or change the default save location
- Press Shift–Command–5 to open Screenshot.
- Click Options.
- Read the destination under Save to.
- Choose Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, Preview, or another available destination.
- Choose Other Location to browse to a specific folder, then select it.
The setting applies to later captures until you change it again. A screenshot may therefore be somewhere other than the Desktop even when you used a familiar keyboard shortcut.
Use Terminal to search when Finder is faster to script
find "$HOME" -type f -name 'Screen Shot*' -print 2>/dev/null
This searches your home folder for files using the standard filename prefix. Searching can take longer if your home folder contains many files or mounted cloud folders.
Save one screenshot somewhere else
When the floating thumbnail appears in the lower-right corner, drag it into a Finder folder, a document, or an app that accepts images. This changes the location of that individual capture without changing the default destination.
If the thumbnail is disabled or disappears before you can drag it, open Shift–Command–5, choose Options, and enable Show Floating Thumbnail.
Send a screenshot to the Clipboard instead of saving a file
Hold Control while using a screenshot shortcut. For example, Control–Shift–Command–3 copies the full screen to the Clipboard rather than creating a normal Desktop file. You can then paste it into Mail, Messages, an editor, or another app.
You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. Clipboard contents are temporary: copying another item or restarting the Mac can replace them, so save the image as a file when you need a durable copy.
Which shortcut creates which result?
| Action | Shortcut | Normal result |
|---|---|---|
| Capture the entire screen | Shift–Command–3 | Image saved to the current Save to destination |
| Capture a selected area | Shift–Command–4 | Image saved to the current Save to destination |
| Open capture controls | Shift–Command–5 | Choose screen, window, recording, destination, timer, and thumbnail options |
| Copy the full screen | Control–Shift–Command–3 | Image copied to Clipboard instead of saved as a file |
| Copy a selected area | Control–Shift–Command–4 | Selected image copied to Clipboard instead of saved as a file |
If screenshots are not on the Desktop
- Save to was changed: Open Shift–Command–5 and inspect Options → Save to.
- You copied instead of saved: A shortcut containing Control sends the image to the Clipboard. Paste it into an app or save it from there.
- You dragged the thumbnail: Check the folder or document where you dropped it.
- The screenshot was renamed: Search by the modified date, file type, or a distinctive part of the new name.
- The capture failed: Confirm that the shortcut completed and that the selected area or window was available. Try Screenshot from Applications → Utilities.
- Desktop is hidden by Finder settings: Open Finder, choose Finder → Settings → Sidebar, and enable Desktop.
- Cloud storage moved the file: Check iCloud Drive or any third-party folder selected under Other Location.
macOS version and format notes
Apple documents Screenshot app capture for macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. Supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later may offer SDR (PNG) or HDR (HEIF) capture choices. Those format options depend on the Mac model and macOS version; they do not change the basic rule that the destination is controlled by Save to.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots of web pages rather than your Mac display, ScreenshotNeo returns a clean PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Local Mac screenshots are immediate and have no per-capture charge, but they only capture what is rendered on your display and require access to that Mac. For automated web captures, ScreenshotNeo supports caching with a TTL you choose, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call. Failed loads and cache hits are not billed, which helps when a target page is unavailable or already cached.
