Where Do Microsoft Screenshots Go?

Find the exact Windows folder for PrtScn, Snipping Tool, and Xbox Game Bar screenshots—and recover captures that seem to be missing.

The save location depends on how you captured the screen. Windows + PrtScn normally creates a PNG in Pictures\Screenshots. Snipping Tool saves captures in its Screenshots folder. Pressing PrtScn by itself, or Alt + PrtScn, puts the image on the Clipboard and does not create a file until you paste and save it. Xbox Game Bar saves game and app captures in Videos\Captures.

Windows screenshot locations at a glance

Method Automatic file? Default location or destination What is captured
Windows + PrtScn Yes Pictures\Screenshots Entire screen
Snipping Tool Yes, after the snip Its Screenshots folder; settings can change saving behavior or destination Rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform snip
PrtScn No Clipboard Entire screen
Alt + PrtScn No Clipboard Active window
Windows + Alt + PrtScn Yes Videos\Captures Game or app window

These defaults apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. A different Windows language, a relocated profile folder, or changed Snipping Tool settings can change the visible path.

Windows + PrtScn: the Pictures\Screenshots folder

Press Windows + PrtScn. The screen briefly dims and Windows writes an image file to your user profile’s Pictures folder:

C:\Users\<your-user-name>\Pictures\Screenshots

Open File Explorer, select Pictures, then Screenshots. Microsoft Support documents this as the normal destination for this shortcut.

Open the folder quickly

  1. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select Pictures in the left pane.
  3. Open Screenshots.
  4. Sort by Date modified to put the newest capture first.

You can also paste this path into File Explorer’s address bar, replacing the profile name:

%USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Screenshots

Snipping Tool: where its captures are saved

After you take a snip, Snipping Tool automatically saves it to its Screenshots folder. Microsoft describes the behavior as: “After you capture a snip, it’s automatically saved to your Screenshots folder.” The app’s settings can change automatic-save behavior or the destination.

Find a Snipping Tool capture

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Take a snip with Windows + Shift + S or the app’s New button.
  3. Open the notification or the Snipping Tool editor.
  4. Use Save or Save as if you want to choose a known folder.
  5. If no file appears in Pictures, open Snipping Tool Settings and check its automatic-save option and destination.

Snipping Tool supports selected-area, window, full-screen, and freeform captures. The selection type changes what is in the image, but the save behavior is controlled by the app settings.

PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn: the Clipboard, not a folder

Pressing PrtScn captures the entire screen and copies it to the Clipboard. Alt + PrtScn copies the active window. Microsoft Support states that Print Screen copies the image to the Clipboard in the computer’s memory.

Because no file is created at capture time, you will not find a new PNG in Pictures. Save it manually:

  1. Press PrtScn or Alt + PrtScn.
  2. Open Paint, Word, an email draft, or another image-capable app.
  3. Press Ctrl + V.
  4. Choose File → Save as and select PNG, JPEG, or another format.

If you copied something else afterward, the screenshot may have been replaced in the Clipboard. Take the capture again and save it immediately.

Xbox Game Bar: Videos\Captures

For a game or app, press Windows + Alt + PrtScn. Xbox Game Bar saves the capture as a PNG under:

C:\Users\<your-user-name>\Videos\Captures

In File Explorer, open Videos, then Captures. This location is separate from Pictures\Screenshots, so searching only Pictures can make a Game Bar screenshot appear to be missing.

OneDrive and Windows screenshots

The dedicated Save screenshots to OneDrive setting is no longer available in OneDrive settings, according to Microsoft Support. Screenshots can still sync when the local Pictures folder is included in OneDrive backup.

Including a folder in OneDrive’s photo experience does not by itself upload every local file. Check whether Pictures backup is enabled and whether the file has finished syncing. A screenshot saved in Videos\Captures will not be covered by Pictures backup unless you separately include that folder.

How to find a screenshot you just took

  1. Identify the method: Windows + PrtScn, Snipping Tool, PrtScn, Alt + PrtScn, or Game Bar.
  2. Check Pictures\Screenshots and Videos\Captures.
  3. If you used PrtScn or Alt + PrtScn, paste the Clipboard contents into Paint and save them.
  4. In File Explorer, search the whole PC and OneDrive for recent image files such as *.png, *.jpg, or *.jpeg.
  5. Sort results by Date modified and check the newest files.
  6. Look for a relocated Pictures or Videos folder under your profile, especially after moving known folders or changing Windows language settings.

Windows Search can return files stored on the PC and in OneDrive. Searching both locations is useful when you are unsure whether synchronization has completed.

Troubleshooting missing screenshots

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No file after pressing PrtScn PrtScn only copied the image to the Clipboard Paste into Paint or another app, then save it
Nothing in Pictures\Screenshots You used Game Bar, Snipping Tool settings changed, or Pictures was relocated Check Videos\Captures, Snipping Tool Settings, and the profile’s current Pictures path
Game screenshot is missing Looking in Pictures instead of Videos Open Videos\Captures
Old screenshot appears locally but not online Pictures backup is disabled or sync is pending Enable Pictures in OneDrive backup and wait for synchronization
Screenshot was overwritten or lost Clipboard content was replaced by a later copy operation Repeat the capture and save it immediately
Search returns too many results Searching all file types or all dates Filter for PNG/JPEG files and sort by Date modified
Folder names differ Windows language or profile-folder customization Use File Explorer’s Pictures and Videos navigation, or search by file type

Choosing the right capture method

  • Use Windows + PrtScn when you want a full-screen file created immediately.
  • Use Snipping Tool when you need a selected region, window, freeform shape, annotations, or a configurable save workflow.
  • Use PrtScn when you want to paste the full screen directly into another document or message.
  • Use Alt + PrtScn for only the active window.
  • Use Xbox Game Bar for a game or app capture that should be grouped with recordings in Videos.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of web pages for documentation, monitoring, previews, or automation, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, inspect pages, and capture PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • Local Windows shortcuts are immediate and have no service charge, but Clipboard-based methods require a separate save step.
  • File searches are fastest when you search by image extension and sort by modification time.
  • Cloud synchronization adds a delay before a screenshot appears on another device.
  • For automated web captures, caching can reduce repeated work; ScreenshotNeo lets you choose a cache TTL. Failed loads and cache hits are not billed.
  • For many URLs, ScreenshotNeo supports bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call and asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks.
