Where Do Screenshots Go on Your Computer?

Find your screenshots quickly on Windows, Mac, GNOME and KDE, then learn how to change the save folder or recover a missing capture.

Short answer: the location depends on both your operating system and the app or keyboard shortcut that captured the image. Windows Snipping Tool normally saves to Screenshots; macOS normally saves to the Desktop; GNOME saves to Pictures/Screenshots; and KDE Spectacle normally uses Pictures. Each tool lets you change the destination, and some captures go only to the clipboard.

Quick reference

Platform and tool Typical default Clipboard or thumbnail behavior Change it
Windows Snipping Tool Screenshots folder Use Save as Image for another copy Snipping Tool → More (…) → Settings
macOS Screenshot Desktop A corner thumbnail can be dragged elsewhere Screenshot → Options → Save to
GNOME Pictures/Screenshots Still images are also copied to the clipboard Use your configured XDG pictures directory and file manager
KDE Plasma Spectacle Pictures for Save Save As can choose a different folder and format Spectacle settings → save location

These are documented defaults, not a universal rule. A shortcut, browser extension, cloud-sync utility or third-party capture app can use another folder.

Windows: find screenshots from Snipping Tool

Default location

Microsoft documents automatic saving to the Screenshots folder. Open File Explorer and select Pictures → Screenshots. If your Windows profile uses a redirected or OneDrive-backed Pictures folder, the physical path may differ.

Check or change the folder

  1. Open Snipping Tool.
  2. Select the More (…) menu, then Settings.
  3. Review the automatic-save option and default Screenshots folder.
  4. For a separate copy, open the capture and choose Save as Image, then pick a folder, filename and format.

Microsoft’s instructions are in Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

If you used a keyboard shortcut

Different Windows shortcuts have different behavior. A shortcut that opens Snipping Tool follows Snipping Tool’s settings. A shortcut that copies the screen or selection may put the image on the clipboard without creating a file. Paste into Paint, an image editor or a document, then save it if you need a file.

Mac: find screenshots saved by Screenshot

Default location

Apple’s documented default destination is the Desktop. Look for a file whose name begins with “Screenshot” and includes the date and time.

Change the destination

  1. Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Under Save to, choose Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, Preview or another location.

A screenshot thumbnail appears briefly in a screen corner. Drag that thumbnail to a folder, Finder window or another app before it disappears. Apple’s reference is Take a screenshot on Mac.

When there is no file on the Desktop

Check Screenshot’s Options → Save to setting first. If it is set to Clipboard, paste into Preview or another editor and save. Also check whether the thumbnail was dragged to another folder.

Linux with GNOME

Default location

GNOME Help says a still screenshot is saved in the Screenshots folder under your home Pictures folder. GNOME also copies the still image to the clipboard.

Open your file manager and go to Pictures → Screenshots. On systems with a localized or customized Pictures directory, use the file manager’s Pictures shortcut rather than assuming a literal path. GNOME follows the configured XDG pictures directory; the location can therefore vary with language and desktop settings. See GNOME’s screenshot help and the XDG pictures-directory clarification.

Recover a capture from the clipboard

Open an image editor, press Ctrl-V, and save the pasted image. This is useful when the screenshot shortcut captured an image but the file is not where you expected.

KDE Plasma with Spectacle

Default location

KDE’s Spectacle handbook describes the Pictures folder as the default for the Save action. The exact folder can be changed in Spectacle’s configuration.

  1. Open Spectacle.
  2. Use Save to accept the configured destination, or choose Save As to select a folder, filename and format.
  3. Open Spectacle’s settings to inspect or change its save location.

Spectacle also provides an Open Default Screenshots Folder command, which is the fastest way to locate the configured folder. See the Spectacle Handbook.

Why the expected folder is empty

  • The capture was copied, not saved. Paste into an editor and save a file.
  • The app has a custom destination. Open its settings or use Save As.
  • A cloud or profile folder is involved. Check OneDrive, iCloud Drive, redirected Pictures folders and your file manager’s shortcuts.
  • You are checking the wrong capture tool. Identify whether the shortcut opened Snipping Tool, Screenshot, Spectacle, a browser extension or another utility.
  • The thumbnail was moved. On macOS, search the folders where you may have dragged it.
  • The file is hard to spot. Sort by date, search for recent PNG, JPEG or WebP files, and inspect the application’s recent-files list.

Search for a missing screenshot

Windows

In File Explorer, search your Pictures folder for *.png, *.jpg or *.webp, then sort by Date modified. Check Pictures/Screenshots and any synced Pictures location.

macOS

In Finder, search “Screenshot” or filter for images modified today. Check Desktop, Documents, the Screenshot app’s configured destination and any folder shown in Finder’s Recents.

Linux

Check the file manager’s Pictures shortcut, then its Screenshots subfolder. If GNOME copied the capture to the clipboard, paste it into an editor even when no file exists.

Any platform

Repeat the capture and immediately observe what happens: a file appears, a save dialog opens, a thumbnail appears, or the clipboard changes. That behavior identifies the active tool and its next setting to inspect.

How to choose a predictable destination

  1. Use one capture application for routine work.
  2. Set its save location to a dedicated folder such as Pictures/Screenshots.
  3. Use a consistent format (PNG for lossless UI text, JPEG for smaller photographic images, WebP when supported).
  4. Keep automatic saving enabled if you need an audit trail; use clipboard-only capture for temporary pastes.
  5. Back up or sync the folder if screenshots are work records.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of websites for documentation, monitoring or automation, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one request. It accepts the consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No file appears Clipboard-only capture or an unsaved editor image Paste into an editor and save, then inspect the tool’s save setting
Pictures/Screenshots is missing Custom XDG Pictures directory or another tool Open the file manager’s Pictures shortcut and inspect the active app’s settings
Mac Desktop is empty Screenshot destination changed Shift-Command-5 → Options → Save to
Windows Screenshots is empty Automatic save disabled or redirected folder Snipping Tool → More → Settings; use Save as Image
Only a thumbnail is visible on Mac Capture is waiting for its thumbnail action Drag the thumbnail to a folder or wait for it to save to the configured destination
Website API response is not an image Invalid key, URL, timeout or blocked page Check HTTP status and response headers, confirm the URL, increase waits where needed and review the verdict

Performance, reliability and cost notes

  • Local desktop captures are immediate and have no service charge, but destination and naming depend on the desktop tool.
  • Clipboard-only workflows are quick for pasting but provide no durable file until you save one.
  • For website capture at scale, an API avoids browser installation and supports waits, caching, bulk requests and asynchronous jobs.
  • With ScreenshotNeo, only clean shots are billed; failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and cache hits cost nothing. Use the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers when recording outcomes.

FAQ

Is there one universal screenshots folder?

No. The capture application and its settings decide the destination.

Are screenshots always copied to the clipboard?

No. GNOME documents clipboard copying for still images; other tools may save a file, show a thumbnail or use a configurable clipboard destination.

Can I change the file format?

Use the application’s Save As or format setting. Spectacle and Snipping Tool expose save choices; macOS Screenshot uses the selected destination and system capture settings.

Where do browser screenshots go?

Browser extensions and web apps define their own download or save folder. Check the browser’s downloads list and the extension’s options.

What is the easiest way to capture a website without managing a browser?

Use ScreenshotNeo’s one-request API or MCP server, then save the returned PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF wherever your program chooses.
