How to Take a Screenshot with Win + Print Screen in Windows
Press Windows + PrtScn to capture the entire screen and save it automatically in Pictures\Screenshots on Windows 10 and 11.
Press the Windows logo key and PrtScn together. Windows captures the entire screen and saves the image automatically. Open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots to find it. This shortcut is documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11 by Microsoft Support.
How to use Win + Print Screen
- Arrange your desktop exactly as you want it to appear.
- Press Windows + PrtScn at the same time.
- Open File Explorer.
- Select Pictures, then open Screenshots.
- Open, rename, move, edit, or share the new image.
The screen may briefly dim when the capture is taken. The result is a full-screen image file, so you do not need to paste it into another application first.
Where Windows saves screenshots
By default, Win + PrtScn saves captures in:
Pictures\Screenshots
To open the folder, press Windows + E to launch File Explorer, choose Pictures, and select Screenshots. If your Pictures folder is redirected, synchronized, or managed by your organization, its location can differ. Search File Explorer for Screenshots if the folder is not where you expect.
What the shortcut captures
- Entire screen: the shortcut captures the full display.
- Saved file: Windows writes the image to the Screenshots folder.
- Multiple monitors: the capture can include the desktop arrangement across connected displays, depending on your Windows and display configuration.
- Visible content only: it captures what is currently displayed; it does not automatically scroll through a long webpage.
If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Key labels vary. Look for PrtScn, PrtSc, Print Scr, or a similar abbreviation. On compact laptops, Print Screen may share another key and require Fn.
Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Spacebar as an option for hardware without a PrtScn button. Hardware manufacturers assign keys differently, so check the keyboard labels and your device manual if that combination does not work.
Choose the right Windows capture method
| Goal | Shortcut or tool | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Save the whole screen immediately | Windows + PrtScn | Full-screen image saved in Pictures\Screenshots |
| Select a rectangle, window, or screen area | Windows + Shift + S | Selection workflow; capture is placed on the clipboard and can be opened in Snipping Tool |
| Capture the active window | Alt + PrtScn | Active-window image copied to the clipboard |
| Paste a screen capture into an app | PrtScn | Full-screen image copied to the clipboard |
| Annotate and save | Snipping Tool | Region or full-screen capture with editing and saving options |
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation covers capture modes and editing. A clipboard capture is different from Win + PrtScn: it will not necessarily create a file until you paste and save it.
How to capture only part of the screen
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose rectangle, freeform, window, or full-screen mode from the capture bar.
- Select the area or window.
- Use the notification to open the image in Snipping Tool, annotate it, and save it.
Use this method when the screenshot should exclude private information, other windows, or desktop clutter.
Editing and sharing the saved screenshot
Open the file from Pictures\Screenshots in Paint, Photos, Snipping Tool, or another editor. Crop unnecessary content, add annotations, then save a copy if you want to preserve the original capture. For quick sharing, attach the image from that folder or copy it into your chat, document, or issue tracker.
Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when I press Win + PrtScn
- Press both keys together rather than holding one for several seconds.
- Try Fn with PrtScn if Print Screen is a secondary key label.
- On a keyboard without PrtScn, try Fn + Windows + Spacebar.
- Use Windows + Shift + S to confirm that Windows capture tools respond.
I cannot find the screenshot
- Open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots.
- Search File Explorer for
Screenshotsor sort recent files by date. - Check whether your Pictures folder is redirected to OneDrive or managed by your organization.
- Confirm that you used Win + PrtScn; standalone PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn normally copy to the clipboard instead of saving a file.
The image contains the wrong window or monitor
Win + PrtScn captures the screen state at the moment you press the keys. Close or move unrelated windows first. For one window, use Alt + PrtScn or select the window through Windows + Shift + S.
I need a scrolling webpage screenshot
Win + PrtScn captures the visible desktop and does not provide webpage scrolling. Use a browser’s full-page capture feature, a browser automation script, or a screenshot API for long pages.
The screenshot is too large to upload
Crop it, resize it, or export it as JPEG or WebP in an image editor. Keep the original PNG when you need lossless detail or text clarity.
Performance, reliability, and privacy
- Speed: the shortcut is local and normally completes immediately after the display is rendered.
- Reliability: it depends on Windows receiving the keyboard combination and having a writable destination folder.
- Privacy: the capture includes everything visible on screen, including notifications, account names, and confidential data. Close or hide sensitive content before pressing the keys.
- Storage: repeated full-screen captures can consume disk space. Periodically remove duplicates or move them to project storage.
- Automation: the shortcut is convenient for a person at a desktop, but it is not a practical method for scheduled captures, remote pages, or server-side workflows.
Or skip the browser setup
For automated website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo provides one GET request that returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
FAQ
Does Win + PrtScn work on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. Microsoft’s documented shortcut applies to both versions.
Does Win + PrtScn copy the image or save it?
It saves a full-screen image in Pictures\Screenshots. PrtScn by itself and Alt + PrtScn are clipboard-first workflows.
Can I change the Screenshots folder?
The effective location can be affected by folder redirection or synchronization software. Check the Pictures folder properties and your organization’s storage settings before changing it.
Can this shortcut capture a single monitor?
For a specific monitor or region, use Windows + Shift + S and select the area you need.
What if I need screenshots from a URL instead of my desktop?
Use a browser capture workflow or an API such as ScreenshotNeo. The Windows shortcut only captures the local display.
