How to Use Windows 11’s AI Screenshot Features
Learn when to use Snipping Tool, Text actions, Perfect Screenshot, Click to Do, Recall, and Copilot on Windows 11.
Short answer: Use Snipping Tool for a normal screenshot, video snip, annotation, or local text extraction. Use Perfect Screenshot to automatically frame visible content, Click to Do to act on text or images on screen, Recall to find something you saw earlier, and Copilot when you want to ask a question about a captured screen. Perfect Screenshot and Click to Do require a Copilot+ PC (or an eligible Cloud PC); ordinary capture and Text actions do not.
This guide explains what each feature does, the keyboard shortcuts, hardware and privacy requirements, troubleshooting steps, and when a Windows screenshot is better replaced by an automated website capture.
Which Windows 11 screenshot feature should you use?
| What you need | Use | Hardware or account requirement | Where content is handled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture part or all of the screen | Snipping Tool | Windows 11 | On your PC until you share it |
| Copy words from a screenshot | Snipping Tool Text actions | Windows 11 with the current Snipping Tool | Microsoft says recognition runs locally |
| Tighten the selection around visible content | Perfect Screenshot | Copilot+ PC; feature is marked Copilot+ PC-only | Screen analysis on the device |
| Search, copy, save, or ask about selected screen content | Click to Do | Copilot+ PC or eligible Cloud PC, with documented hardware requirements | Analysis is local; chosen online actions can send selected content to a provider |
| Find something you saw previously | Recall | Supported Copilot+ PC and opt-in snapshot saving | Encrypted local snapshots protected by Windows Hello |
| Ask a question about a screen image | Copilot screenshot feature | Copilot availability and interface vary | The screenshot is shared with Copilot for the question |
1. Take a screenshot with Snipping Tool
Snipping Tool is the starting point for conventional Windows 11 screenshots. Microsoft documents freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen snips, along with annotation, cropping, saving, sharing, and video snips. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide.
- Press
Windows + Shift + S, or open Snipping Tool from Start. - Choose Freeform, Rectangle, Window, or Full screen.
- Select the area or window. A notification opens the result in Snipping Tool.
- Annotate, crop, copy, save, or share the image.
For a video capture, open Snipping Tool and choose the recording control, or press Windows + Shift + R. A video snip is separate from a still screenshot.
Useful capture choices
- Rectangle: predictable dimensions for documentation or bug reports.
- Freeform: useful when only an irregular region matters.
- Window: avoids capturing unrelated windows behind the target.
- Full screen: captures every monitor area Windows exposes to the tool.
2. Copy text from a screenshot with Text actions
Text actions is Snipping Tool’s OCR workflow. It is different from asking an AI chatbot to interpret an image: it identifies text in the captured snip so you can select words or copy the complete result. Microsoft says recognition is performed locally on the device.
- Capture or open an image in Snipping Tool.
- Select Text actions.
- Drag across text to copy a selection, or choose Copy all text.
- Use Quick redact to cover detected email addresses or phone numbers before sharing.
OCR works best with sharp, high-contrast text. If recognition is incomplete, make a tighter rectangular snip, increase the source resolution, or remove visual clutter before trying again.
3. Frame content automatically with Perfect Screenshot
Perfect Screenshot analyzes the visible region and adjusts the selection to frame on-screen content more tightly. Microsoft identifies this feature as Copilot+ PC-only; it is not a standard Windows 11 feature on every laptop.
- Open Snipping Tool and choose Perfect Screenshot when it is available.
- Drag a rectangle around the content you want.
- Review the automatically adjusted frame.
- Use the crop handles to refine it, then save or copy the result.
If Perfect Screenshot is missing, check whether the computer is a Copilot+ PC and whether Windows and Snipping Tool are current. Do not assume that a laptop marketed as an “AI PC” meets Microsoft’s Copilot+ requirements.
4. Use Click to Do on text and images
Click to Do identifies text and images on the screen and presents actions suited to what you select. Microsoft lists entry points including Windows + Q, Windows plus a left-click, a right swipe on a touch-enabled PC, and the Click to Do control in Snipping Tool.
Requirements
Microsoft’s documented list requires a Copilot+ PC or eligible Cloud PC with a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, 8 logical processors, and 256 GB of storage. The Snipping Tool entry point requires version 11.2411.20.0 or later. Availability also depends on Windows configuration, region, and language. Check the current Click to Do support page before relying on a specific action.
Typical actions
- Copy recognized text.
- Search the web or use visual search.
- Open a detected website.
- Copy or save an image.
- Open an image in Photos, Paint, or Snipping Tool.
- Ask Copilot about the selected material.
Click to Do performs screen analysis locally, but some actions intentionally send selected content to an online provider. Read the action description before choosing web search, visual search, or another connected action. The available menu can differ by region; Microsoft documents differences including restrictions in the European Economic Area and China.
5. Find an earlier screen with Recall
Recall is for retrieving something you previously saw, rather than making a one-off screenshot. It is optional and requires you to opt in to saving snapshots on a supported Copilot+ PC.
- Opt in to Recall snapshot saving during Windows setup or in Recall settings.
- Search using remembered words or describe what you recall seeing.
- Open a matching snapshot.
- Use Click to Do on the opened snapshot when you need an action.
Microsoft says Recall uses local OCR, stores encrypted snapshots and derived context on the device, and protects access with Windows Hello. You can pause saving, delete snapshots, or turn Recall off. A snapshot search is not the same thing as manually saving a screenshot, so use Snipping Tool when you need a file you can name and send.
6. Ask Copilot about a screenshot
Copilot for Windows includes a screenshot workflow for capturing all or part of the screen and asking a question about it. For example, you might capture an error message and ask what it means, or capture a chart and ask for a summary. This sends the screenshot to Copilot for the question, so treat it separately from Snipping Tool’s local OCR workflow. Microsoft’s Copilot getting-started guidance and the current app interface determine the exact controls available to you.
Privacy and eligibility checklist
- Standard Snipping Tool capture and Text actions are not limited to Copilot+ PCs.
- Perfect Screenshot and Click to Do are documented as Copilot+ features.
- Click to Do’s analysis can be local while a selected online action sends content outside the device.
- Recall snapshot saving is opt-in and has pause, delete, and turn-off controls.
- Hardware, app version, Windows settings, region, and language can change what appears.
- Before capturing passwords, customer data, health information, or source code, check where the chosen action sends the content.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a repeatable screenshot of a website, automating a browser on Windows means handling navigation, viewport size, fonts, cookie banners, popups, lazy loading, and failed pages yourself. ScreenshotNeo provides a GET endpoint for a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF and an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. You can also configure full-page capture with lazy images, CSS element capture, dark mode, device presets, viewport and retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked requests, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, async webhooks, bulk capture, and usage reporting. Its MCP tools include take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Windows + Shift + S does nothing |
Shortcut interception, disabled Snipping Tool, or a Windows shell issue | Open Snipping Tool from Start, install pending Windows and Store updates, and check keyboard utility settings. |
| Text actions is missing | The image is not open in Snipping Tool or the app is outdated | Open the capture in Snipping Tool, update the app, and recapture a sharper region. |
| OCR text is wrong | Low resolution, unusual font, blur, or low contrast | Capture at a larger scale, crop tightly, improve contrast, or copy the source text directly. |
| Perfect Screenshot is unavailable | Device is not an eligible Copilot+ PC or the feature is not enabled in the current build | Verify the device category and Windows updates; use a normal rectangular snip when it is unavailable. |
| Click to Do has no actions | Unsupported hardware, app version, region, language, or selection | Verify the documented requirements and Snipping Tool version, then select a clearer text or image region. |
| Recall finds nothing | Snapshot saving was never enabled, was paused, or the item was deleted | Review Recall settings and search terms; use Snipping Tool for future files. |
| Copilot cannot answer about the image | The screenshot was not shared, the question is ambiguous, or the feature is unavailable | Recapture the relevant region, state the question precisely, and check the current Copilot interface. |
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Fastest one-off capture: Snipping Tool’s keyboard shortcut avoids launching a browser.
- Best repeatability: Use a defined rectangle, window, or automated API request instead of manually dragging each time.
- Large pages: A browser or screenshot API must wait for lazy-loaded images and network activity; a viewport snip only captures what is currently visible.
- Reliability: Check that the intended app is focused, fonts have loaded, and sensitive overlays are closed before capture.
- Cost: Windows screenshot tools are included with Windows. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 free monthly shots and paid usage from $5 for 3,000; failed loads and other non-clean results are not billed.
FAQ
Do I need a Copilot+ PC to take screenshots in Windows 11?
No. Snipping Tool and its documented Text actions work as ordinary Windows features. Perfect Screenshot and Click to Do are the features Microsoft marks as Copilot+ PC-dependent.
Is Text actions the same as Copilot?
No. Text actions performs OCR in Snipping Tool, while Copilot’s screenshot workflow sends a captured image for a question.
Does Recall automatically save every screenshot I make?
Recall saves snapshots only after you opt in, and Microsoft provides controls to pause, delete, or disable saving.
Can Click to Do work without sending data online?
Its screen analysis is local, but actions such as web or visual search can send selected content to an online provider. Inspect the action before using it.
What should I use for scheduled website screenshots?
Use a repeatable capture service such as ScreenshotNeo when you need an API, PDF output, element selection, waits, blocking rules, or automation from an AI agent.
