Windows 11 has several built-in screenshot tools. Use Windows + Shift + S to select a region, Windows + PrtScn to save the entire screen directly to a file, or the Snipping Tool for window, freeform, full-screen, and video captures.

Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen. The right method depends on whether you need a clipboard image, a saved file, an active window, a game capture, or a video clip.

Quick shortcut guide

Need Shortcut or tool Result
Select part of the screen Windows + Shift + S Snip is copied to the clipboard; a notification opens it in Snipping Tool.
Save the full screen immediately Windows + PrtScn PNG saved in Pictures\Screenshots.
Copy the active window Alt + PrtScn Active window is copied to the clipboard.
Capture a game or app Windows + Alt + PrtScn PNG saved in Videos\Captures.
Record a desktop region Windows + Shift + R Snipping Tool records a selected rectangle as an MP4.
Record a game or app Windows + Alt + R Xbox Game Bar records an MP4 in Videos\Captures.

1. Capture part of the screen with Windows + Shift + S

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip from the overlay.
  3. Drag over the area, select a window, or choose the full-screen option.
  4. The image is copied to the clipboard. Select the notification to open it in Snipping Tool.
  5. Use Save to create a file, or paste it into another application with Ctrl + V.

This is the fastest option when you need only part of a display. It does not automatically create a permanent file until you save the result.

Rectangular versus freeform snips

  • Rectangular: drag a precise rectangle around content.
  • Freeform: draw an irregular outline around the area you want.
  • Window: select one application window.
  • Full screen: capture every monitor or the available screen area shown by Snipping Tool.

2. Save a full-screen screenshot with Windows + PrtScn

  1. Press Windows + PrtScn.
  2. Open File Explorer and go to Pictures\Screenshots.
  3. Open, rename, move, or share the PNG like any other file.

This shortcut is useful when you want a file immediately and do not need to select an area. On some keyboards, PrtScn is labeled Print Screen or shares a key with another function.

3. Understand the PrtScn key

On current Windows 11 installations, pressing PrtScn may open screen snipping instead of copying the whole screen. To change that behavior, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and check Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.

If your keyboard has no dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar as an alternative on some hardware. The exact combination depends on the device manufacturer.

4. Copy only the active window

  1. Click the window you want to capture.
  2. Press Alt + PrtScn.
  3. Paste the result into Paint, Word, an image editor, or another application with Ctrl + V.

This route copies the active window to the clipboard. It does not automatically save a file, so use Save As in the application where you paste it.

5. Use Snipping Tool for images

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Choose New and select rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen mode.
  3. Capture the content.
  4. Edit it with the pen, highlighter, shapes, eraser, crop, undo, and redo controls.
  5. Use Text actions to extract text or quickly redact detected email addresses and phone numbers.
  6. Save or share the result.

Microsoft says text recognition for Text actions runs locally on the device. The exact tools visible can vary by Windows update and device capabilities.

To capture an open menu, launch Snipping Tool first, open the menu, then press Ctrl + PrtScn to bring up capture mode while the menu remains visible.

Copilot+ PC-only functions

Microsoft identifies Perfect Screenshot and Color picker as features limited to Copilot+ PCs. Do not assume these controls are available on every Windows 11 computer.

6. Record a screen clip with Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows + Shift + R, or open Snipping Tool and choose the video option.
  2. Drag around the area to record.
  3. Start the recording, reproduce the action, and stop it when finished.
  4. Save the resulting MP4. Microsoft documents Videos\Screen Recordings as the default location.

Snipping Tool can hand a video snip to Clipchamp for additional editing, including captions or audio.

7. Capture or record a game with Xbox Game Bar

Xbox Game Bar is intended for games and apps. Enable it in Windows settings before relying on its shortcuts.

  • Windows + Alt + PrtScn captures a PNG in Videos\Captures.
  • Windows + Alt + R starts or stops an MP4 recording in Videos\Captures.

Game Bar is a separate capture path from Snipping Tool, so its shortcuts may not work in every desktop context.

Where Windows 11 screenshots are saved

Capture type Default result Default location
Windows + PrtScn PNG file Pictures\Screenshots
Game Bar screenshot PNG file Videos\Captures
Windows + Shift + S Clipboard image Save manually from Snipping Tool
Alt + PrtScn Clipboard image Paste and save manually
Snipping Tool video MP4 file Videos\Screen Recordings
Game Bar recording MP4 file Videos\Captures

If OneDrive backs up your Pictures folder, the effective path may also appear under your OneDrive Pictures directory. Use File Explorer search for *.png or sort the Screenshots folder by date when you cannot find a file.

8. Choosing the right built-in method

  • Choose Windows + Shift + S for a quick region, window, or freeform capture.
  • Choose Windows + PrtScn when a full-screen PNG file is the goal.
  • Choose Alt + PrtScn when only the active window matters.
  • Choose Snipping Tool when you need annotation, OCR, redaction, or a selected-area video.
  • Choose Xbox Game Bar for game and app captures.

9. Troubleshooting

PrtScn opens an overlay instead of copying the screen

Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. The setting controls this behavior.

Nothing appears after Windows + Shift + S

The image may be on the clipboard rather than saved. Paste it with Ctrl + V, or select the Snipping Tool notification and save it.

The screenshot file is missing

Check Pictures\Screenshots for Windows + PrtScn, and Videos\Captures for Game Bar. For a Snipping Tool image or clipboard capture, save it manually.

Your keyboard has no Print Screen key

Try the device-specific Fn + Windows + Space Bar combination documented by Microsoft, or use Windows + Shift + S.

A menu disappears before capture

Open Snipping Tool first, open the menu, then press Ctrl + PrtScn to enter capture mode without closing it.

Game Bar shortcuts do not work

Enable Xbox Game Bar in Windows settings and make sure you are capturing a supported game or app context. Use Snipping Tool for ordinary desktop regions.

The video editor is missing

Snipping Tool can pass a video snip to Clipchamp, but Clipchamp availability and installed components can differ by Windows edition and updates.

10. Reliability, performance, and file considerations

  • Clipboard captures are temporary: save important images immediately because another copy operation can replace the clipboard contents.
  • Full-screen files are predictable: Windows + PrtScn writes directly to the Screenshots folder and is convenient for repeated captures.
  • Video files are larger: record only the area and duration you need, then trim the clip in Clipchamp if necessary.
  • Multiple monitors need checking: confirm the selected monitor or region before saving, especially when sensitive content is open on another display.
  • Privacy: review captures before sharing; screenshots can include notifications, account details, email addresses, or other windows.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need repeatable screenshots of web pages instead of a one-off desktop capture, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. It accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response reports the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. This is a complete request using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
