Windows Default Screenshot Program
Windows' built-in screenshot program is Snipping Tool. Learn every shortcut, save location, capture mode, recording option, and troubleshooting fix.
Windows’ built-in screenshot program is Snipping Tool. Press Windows+Shift+S to select a region, use Alt+PrtScn for the active window, or press Windows+PrtScn to save a full-screen image when your hardware supports it. Snipping Tool also captures freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen stills, plus video snips on supported Windows versions. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions document these modes and controls.
Which Windows screenshot shortcut should you use?
| Need | Shortcut or route | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Select part of the screen | Windows+Shift+S | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay; select a region and edit or save it. |
| Capture the active window | Alt+PrtScn | Copies the active window to the clipboard. |
| Capture the entire screen | Windows+PrtScn | Usually saves an image in Pictures > Screenshots. |
| Open Snipping Tool directly | Start menu search for Snipping Tool | Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture, then save or annotate. |
| Record a region | Windows+Shift+R or Snipping Tool > Record | Creates a video snip on supported versions. |
Shortcuts can vary with keyboard hardware and Windows settings. Microsoft’s Windows shortcut reference lists the current behavior, including configurable Print Screen settings.
How to take a selected-area screenshot
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Wait for the screen to dim and choose a capture mode if needed.
- Drag over the area you want. Release the mouse or trackpad.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification or window to crop, annotate, copy, share, or save the image.
The capture is available in Snipping Tool and is also copied to the clipboard. Paste it into an editor, document, chat, or email with Ctrl+V.
How to capture a window or the full screen
Active window to the clipboard
Focus the window, then press Alt+PrtScn. Paste the result into another application. This is useful when you do not want the taskbar or other windows included.
Full screen with Snipping Tool
Open Snipping Tool, select Full screen, and capture. You can then edit and choose where to save the file.
Full screen saved automatically
Press Windows+PrtScn where supported. Open File Explorer and check Pictures > Screenshots. Microsoft’s Print Screen guidance also documents Fn+Windows+Space as a possible alternative on devices without a PrtScn key.
Snipping Tool capture modes
- Rectangular: drag a rectangular selection.
- Freeform: draw around an irregular area.
- Window: select one application window.
- Full screen: capture every visible display area available to the tool.
After a still capture, use Snipping Tool’s controls to mark up, crop, copy, share, or save. Automatic saving behavior and its setting can differ by Windows version; check Snipping Tool settings if files are being saved unexpectedly.
Can Snipping Tool record video?
On supported Windows versions, choose Record, select New, drag over a rectangular region, and start or stop recording. The documented shortcut is Windows+Shift+R. The resulting clip can be saved or opened in Clipchamp. Video capture is separate from still screenshots and availability is version-sensitive.
Where screenshots go
| Capture method | Initial destination |
|---|---|
| Print Screen | Clipboard; paste it into another application. |
| Alt+PrtScn | Clipboard, containing the active window. |
| Windows+PrtScn | Typically Pictures > Screenshots. |
| Snipping Tool | The tool and clipboard first; save with its save control or configured automatic-save behavior. |
Windows version and hardware caveats
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but features are not identical on every device. The documentation marks Perfect Screenshot and Color picker as available only on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. A keyboard may omit PrtScn, map it to another key, or be configured so Print Screen opens screen snipping. If a shortcut does nothing, check Windows Settings, your keyboard’s Fn layer, and the current Snipping Tool version.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S does nothing | Snipping Tool is disabled, outdated, or the shortcut is intercepted. | Open Snipping Tool from Start, install Windows and app updates, then check keyboard shortcut settings. |
| Print Screen only copies an image | That is its normal clipboard behavior. | Paste with Ctrl+V, or use Windows+PrtScn for a saved full-screen file. |
| No file appears in Pictures > Screenshots | The shortcut was not Windows+PrtScn, automatic saving is disabled, or the keyboard requires Fn. | Save from Snipping Tool, try Fn+Windows+Space where applicable, and review Snipping Tool settings. |
| Only one monitor is captured | The selected mode or window target limits the capture. | Use Full screen or select the required monitor area with Windows+Shift+S. |
| Video recording is unavailable | The Windows build or device does not expose the Record mode. | Update Windows and Snipping Tool; use still capture if Record remains unavailable. |
| Capture contains a private notification | Notifications were visible during selection. | Turn on Do Not Disturb or close sensitive windows before capturing. |
Quality, reliability, and cost considerations
- Quality: A region or window capture excludes unrelated desktop content. For documentation, leave the browser zoom and display scaling consistent between captures.
- Reliability: Clipboard captures depend on the destination application accepting pasted images. Saved files are easier to archive and automate.
- Performance: Still captures are immediate. Video recording and large multi-monitor selections create larger files and may take longer to save.
- Cost: Snipping Tool is included with Windows; no separate screenshot service is required for local captures.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots of web pages in a script, CI job, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo is the first screenshot API to try: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; and its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients take screenshots.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. A GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo supports full-page and element captures, device presets and custom viewports, dark mode, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. Responses identify page verdict and billing with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
