How to Take a Screenshot in Windows With Two Screens

Learn Windows shortcuts for capturing one monitor, both screens, a window, or a selected area with Snipping Tool and Print Screen.

To take a screenshot with two monitors in Windows, press Windows+Shift+S to open Snipping Tool, then choose a capture mode. Select a rectangle or window, or choose Full screen when you need the entire desktop. For a clipboard copy of the whole screen, press Print Screen (PrtSc). Use Alt+Print Screen for only the active window.

If you need one image that spans two extended displays, use a full-screen capture and inspect the result on your exact setup. Microsoft documents the shortcuts and capture modes, but does not promise that every display arrangement will be combined into one image in the same way.

1. Set up the two displays

Windows must detect both monitors before you capture them.

  1. Press Windows+P.
  2. Choose Extend to make one desktop spread across both screens. Choose Duplicate to show the same desktop on each display.
  3. Open Settings → System → Display to detect displays and drag them into the same physical order as your monitors.
  4. Move the pointer between screens to confirm the arrangement.

Microsoft lists four projection choices: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only. See Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions for display arrangement and projection settings.

2. Capture both screens or part of each screen

Use Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  2. Choose a mode from the toolbar: Rectangle, Freeform, Window, or Full screen.
  3. For part of both monitors, choose Rectangle and drag from one display across the boundary to the area on the other display.
  4. For the broadest capture, choose Full screen. Review the resulting image before sharing it.
  5. Click the Snipping Tool notification to open the editor. Crop, annotate, and save with Ctrl+S.

Snipping Tool opens an overlay rather than immediately saving a file. If you dismiss the notification, press Windows, search for Snipping Tool, and open the app to work with a capture you retained.

Use Print Screen for the whole desktop

Press Print Screen (sometimes labeled PrtSc) to copy a static image of the entire screen to the clipboard. Press Ctrl+V in Paint, an email, a document, or another image-capable application, then save the pasted image.

Microsoft describes this as placing the image in the clipboard. It does not establish a universal width, height, or cross-monitor composition for every extended-display configuration, so verify the result on your computer.

Capture only the active window

Click the window you want, then press Alt+Print Screen. Windows copies the active window to the clipboard. Paste it with Ctrl+V and save it in the destination application.

3. Choose the right capture mode

Goal Shortcut or mode Destination
Capture a custom area, including a strip across both monitors Windows+Shift+S → Rectangle Snipping Tool notification/editor
Draw an irregular shape Windows+Shift+S → Freeform Snipping Tool notification/editor
Capture one application window Windows+Shift+S → Window Snipping Tool notification/editor
Capture the complete screen area Windows+Shift+S → Full screen Snipping Tool notification/editor
Copy the entire screen to another app Print Screen Clipboard
Copy only the active window Alt+Print Screen Clipboard

4. How to screenshot both monitors at once

  1. Set the displays to Extend with Windows+P.
  2. Arrange and detect the monitors in Settings → System → Display.
  3. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  4. Select Full screen, or select Rectangle and drag across the section you need.
  5. Open the notification and inspect the image. Check that content from both displays appears in the expected order.
  6. Save with Ctrl+S, or paste a Print Screen capture into another application with Ctrl+V.

Screen scaling, monitor positions, Windows version, and whether you used Snipping Tool or the clipboard can affect what you receive. Treat the actual captured file as authoritative instead of assuming a fixed combined dimension.

5. How to capture only one monitor

For one monitor, use Windows+Shift+S → Rectangle and drag within that display. If you need an application on one monitor, activate its window and press Alt+Print Screen. You can also select Window in Snipping Tool and click the target window.

When displays are duplicated, both monitors show the same desktop. Capturing the duplicated desktop does not produce two independent views; it captures the desktop image Windows presents.

6. Where the screenshot goes

  • Windows+Shift+S: a notification opens the capture in Snipping Tool, where you can edit and save it.
  • Print Screen or Alt+Print Screen: the image is copied to the clipboard. Paste it with Ctrl+V into Paint, a document, chat, or another compatible app.
  • Ctrl+S in Snipping Tool: opens the save workflow so you can choose the file name, location, and image format offered by your Windows version.

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation covers capture, editing, and saving. Its Print Screen guidance covers full-screen, active-window, and clipboard behavior.

7. Troubleshooting two-monitor screenshots

Problem Likely cause Fix
Only one monitor appears Windows is using PC screen only, or the second display was not detected. Press Windows+P and choose Extend or Duplicate. In Display settings, select Detect and confirm both screens are listed.
The screenshot is copied but no file exists Print Screen uses the clipboard. Paste with Ctrl+V into Paint or another app, then save. Use Snipping Tool if you want an editor and save command.
The two-screen image is missing part of a display The selection did not cross the monitor boundary, or the displays are arranged with an offset. Rearrange displays in Settings, then make a new rectangle selection. For the widest result, try Full screen and inspect it.
The wrong window was captured The target was not active when Alt+Print Screen was pressed. Click the target window first, then press Alt+Print Screen, or use Snipping Tool’s Window mode.
The overlay does not open The shortcut was mistyped, a keyboard function layer intercepted it, or Snipping Tool is unavailable. Press the keys together, search for Snipping Tool from Start, and check keyboard settings or updates if the app will not launch.
The capture looks scaled or blurry Displays may use different scaling or resolutions. Check Display settings for each monitor’s resolution and scale. Capture the exact region needed and review it at 100% before exporting.
A protected video is black Some apps protect their video surface from screen capture. Use the application’s supported export or sharing feature and respect its access controls.

8. Reliability and performance tips

  • Wait until both monitors finish changing resolution or orientation before opening the capture overlay.
  • Close menus and transient notifications if they should not appear in the image.
  • For repeatable documentation, keep monitor arrangement, scale, and projection mode consistent.
  • Use Window mode for a stable application capture; use Rectangle for a specific cross-monitor region.
  • Review the saved image at its native size. A capture that looks correct in a preview may omit a monitor edge or include an unwanted desktop area.
  • For a single image spanning both screens, make a test capture after any hardware, docking-station, resolution, or Windows configuration change.

9. Or skip the browser setup

If what you really need is a screenshot of a web page rather than the physical Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and lets you turn each cleanup step off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. This runnable cURL example saves a WebP image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

10. Frequently asked questions

Can I screenshot both monitors with one shortcut?

Try Windows+Shift+S and choose Full screen, or press Print Screen for a clipboard capture. Check the resulting image because Windows documentation does not guarantee one universal cross-monitor composition.

What is the shortcut for one monitor?

Use Rectangle or Window mode in Snipping Tool. For an active application, Alt+Print Screen copies only that window.

Does Windows automatically save Print Screen images?

Print Screen places the image in the clipboard. Paste it into an application and save it, or use Snipping Tool’s editor and Ctrl+S.

Should my monitors be Extend or Duplicate?

Choose Extend when you want one desktop spread across two screens. Choose Duplicate when both displays should show the same desktop.

Why should I test a two-monitor full-screen capture?

Display arrangement, scaling, Windows version, and capture path can change the result. A test confirms what your actual setup produces.

For Windows desktop screenshots, Snipping Tool and Print Screen cover selections, windows, active applications, and full-screen captures. For automated web-page images without browser setup, use ScreenshotNeo’s API or MCP server.
